How to Pick Out Replacement Hub Assembly for 1988 Prowler Lynx 15f

Question:

Both hub assemblies are a mess on this 2000 lb camper. Ive been told that the hub assembly had been discontinued and the local trailer shop said they didnt have any viable replacements and would need to put a new axle on with updated components. What dimensions do I need to get to begin looking for replacement hub assemblies or am I out of luck and forced to get a new setup? Its a 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

In order to pick out the correct hub assembly for a trailer you are going to need know a few key pieces of information. The first thing you will need to know is the bolt pattern of your hubs. This is so you get a hub that is compatible with your wheels.

Next thing you will need to know is what spindle you have on your trailer. In order to do that you can either get the inner and outer bearing numbers from a hub or use a dial or digital caliper to get exact measurements of the spindle. The measurements needed are the parts of the spindle where the bearings ride.

You would want to first select the bolt pattern that you have, next select the inner bearing you have, followed by selecting your outer bearing, and then all the correct hubs will be listed.

Hi Jameson. I am in a similar situation to Ben. We have an 1990 Prowler Lynx that has a malfunctioning wheel bearing. I've exhausted the local auto supply and industrial supply venders trying to locate a hub and bearing components to repair but haven't found the components. I old bearing and grease seal do not have readable parts numbers, even the adjacent wheel on the two axle camper. I took your instructions to measure the spindle diameters. As per your drawing of the spindle that you supplied Ben, The A is 1.8600 inches, B is 1.7535 inches, C is 1.2505 inches, D is 1.074 inches and E is 1.0015 inches. The length of the spindle from the outer edge of A to the outer limit of E is around 3.1080 inches. Can you advise me on this endeavor? thanking you, John P.

@JohnP I wish we had a hub that matched those spindle dimensions but nothing we offer does. This also checks out due to the age of your axle. Most trailer components from the era of your trailer just aren't around. I would say you could replace the spindle but most of the time it's best to just replace the entire axle.

@JamesonC Thanks for the guidance. The original hub has some damage that maybe can be smoothed via grinding and then replace the racings. I have found an outer bearing that fits the spindle, but the inner and the grease seal have not been located. The bearings and seal on the adjacent tire do not have part numbers on them, but I was thinking about pulling the adjacent hub again and with the new caliper measuring them for replacement. etrailer seems to have a good selection and the dimensions are posted.
