Replacement for Fulton XLT1801 Boat Trailer Winch and Boat-Size-to-Winch Capacity
Updated 06/15/2018 | Published 06/13/2018 >
Question:
I have a 2008 Mastercraft X1 with a Mastercraft trailer that came with a Fulton XLT1801 winch. Over the years, I believe I have made the mistake of overloading the winch when loading the boat back onto the trailer, and now the gears of the winch are slipping/rounded off. The winch states Max line pull 1800lbs 1st layer 800lbs full drum. I assume that I need a winch that is at least capable of 1800lbs capacity. Do I need to purchase a whole new winch, or can I just replace the gears? If the latter, it doesnt seem that the Fulton XLT1801 is available anymore. What would be a suitable replacement? Of note, it has 3 bolts that attach it to the trailer, not 4. Thanks in advance for your help!

First let's talk about capacity since you think you were overloading your Fulton XLT 1801. The reason it says max line pull is 1800 lbs first layer and 800 lbs with a full drum is that for every layer of rope wrapped around the drum the capacity is reduced by 10 percent, so the capacity decreases the more line that is around the drum.
Additionally, the boat-size-to-winch capacity is usually 2-to-1 although if the winching distance is short and you have roller bunks that can be 3-to-1 while if the winching distance is longer and you do not have roller bunks the ratio can be 1-to-1. So the capacity you needs depends on your boat's weight, your trailer's set up and the winchcing distance.
You will need to replace your Fulton XLT 1801 as we do not carry replacement gears that are confirmed to fit this model.
I recommend checking out Trailer Winch # 315-W2500D which has a 2,500 lb capacity and comes with a 20' strap.
