Question:
Another question- My trailer wiring connector on my truck was broken by the previous owner, and sometimes loses connection- I was trying to replace it but it does not have a universal connector- it is hard wired - what do i need to replace this? Would it be better to install a universal plug 1st? Why did they make a factory system in 2005 that did not have a plug? (rhetorical question I guess)

It is not extremely uncommon for the hitch pin hole on a trailer hitch receiver to become oblong after frequent usage. This is usually attributed to frequent back and forth movement of the shank inside the receiver tube opening that in time will deform the hitch pin hole. A good way to prevent or reduce this would be to use an anti-rattle device like part # GY88XR.
Since the hitch pin hole on your existing trailer hitch has become deformed then I do recommend replacement as the problem will only worsen. For this, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C15410 which is an extremely heavy-duty Class V hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening. The hitch is made right here in the U.S.A. and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.
I have attached an install video of the above hitch for you as well.
