Could I Use a Hitch Extender For Additional Clearance When Towing My Trailer

Published 07/21/2011

Question:

Have a tear trailer that I tow. I want to take my quad with me in the bed of my truck, but I have to leave the tailgate down on in order for the quad to fit. Problem is, that I am afraid the corner of the tailgate might hit the front of the trailer if I turn too tight. Thought that a 11 extension would provide a little more room Will this extension work for such an application?

This Roadmaster Trailer Hitch Extension # RM-071 would not be the correct hitch extension for you. You might be able to use an 8 Inch Hitch Extender for 2 inch hitches # e88YR. However, you should note that if you use a hitch extender you essentially cut the towing capacities of the hitch in half.

The # RM-071 that you referenced is designed for flat-towing purposes only.

I attached an FAQ article on hitch extenders for you to check out also.
