What Type of Leather is Thomas Payne Furniture Made of

Updated 03/24/2022 | Published 03/08/2018

Question:

Does the leather or fake leather flake on the Thomas Payne furniture? There is a 12 month warranty but what happens when in the 3rd year the material starts to flakes off in many area? We have a Wildwood Forrest River camper and this is happening to our couch. We have already replaced the couch seat but now the back of the couch is starting to flake. We have had our camper 4 years and uses it 4 times a year at the ocean. I have contacted Forest River but receive no response.

The Thomas Payne RV Dual Reclining Sofa, # 195-000024-025, and most of the Thomas Payne RV furniture is made from PolyHyde, which is a European leather with a polymer coating. In general, European leather is finer in quality, but not as durable as American leather. The polymer coating adds to it's stability while allowing it to remain soft and comfortable.

Since RV's often sit unused for months at a time in extreme temperatures, it is not practical to use untreated leather that would need to be properly cleaned and conditioned to keep it from becoming stiff and brittle. The PolyHyde can withstand the temperature changes and is easily cleaned with mild soap and water. I've provided a link to our entire selection of Thomas Payne RV Furniture.

We've yet to hear of the Thomas Payne leather flaking so it would be very unlikely that you'd have an issue.

Should you put a conditioner on thomas Payne collection furniture

A leather conditioner really isn't needed for Thomas Payne furniture because of the Polymer coating they use that works as protection. There's no harm in using a standard leather conditioner if you want, but it's not a requirement for proper upkeep.

The manufacturer of the Thomas Payne furniture needs to invest in a better conditioner because it does not do a good job of protecting....

@ChrisR The best thing you could put on your Thomas Payne furniture is real leather, don't worry, it will peal soon enough, no matter what you put on it.

If the heater stopped working on your sofa the control box could be at fault. You can try testing for continuity with a multimeter on the red and black wires when they are unplugged (behind and beneath the sofa). If you have continuity the box would need to be replaced (part # 195-387596). With that being said, Thomas Payne furniture does come with a 1 year warranty, so any repairs or replacements should still be covered.

@jamesonc I have 3 year old Thomas Payne furniture. We do not live in our RV; it is recreational use. We keep our shades down when the coach is in storage. The material on the head of my recliner has started to crack and flake off. I am really disappointed in the one year warranty of Thomas Payne furniture. I am now going to have to get a cover or have it upholstered. The seat heater works well.

@GaryS we have every piece which is two recliners and one reclining sofa and Thomas Paine is pure junk. We have a 2015 alpine 5th wheel and all the furniture is cracked and peeling badly. We also keep all sun out by keeping the blinds closed in storage which obviously didn't help.

I'm concerned about the durability of the "polyhide" leather. There are quite a few complaints online about the surface cracking and peeling, showing the underlying fabric. Most of the complaints say that Lippert doesn't offer anything beyond a discount price for a new purchase. Does eTrailer REALLY not get complaints about the material? Gary S, above, just posted the concern.

I completely understand your concern here. We do get feedback from time to time about the fabric fading or peeling after a period of time, but it's certainly uncommon. I can say that the polyhide material is designed specifically for this type of application and is built to withstand more extreme elements, since the camper or RV obviously won't be sitting at a comfy 68 degrees year round.

I have 2 suggestions for Thomes-Payne. We just bought a new RV with the Theater Seating type of T-P chairs that includes the Heat/Vibrate/Light feature. Although this works well, those functions turn ON too easily! It would be better if they had a push button or switch. A simple tap turns everything on. Another thing to consider is that any of those functions would automatically turn off if there is no one sitting on the seat for 10 minutes. Secondly, the cup holders are not designed for a regular cup of coffee with handle. I understand that you can't accommodate every situation but do you perhaps sell a different cup sleeve that does allow for regular cups?
