Question:
I have a Hummer H3, prewired for trailer brakes, need to add controller. Is it a DIY project? is there any more to it than wiring and mounting? thank you

Absolutely, installing a brake controller on a vehicle such as your 2009 Hummer H3 is an extremely doable task even for the most novice installer. Since the brake controller wires are already pre-run, the task becomes even more simpler.
The wires for the brake controller are already pre-run under your drivers side dash panel. Once the panel is removed, you should see a cluster of 4 wires with blunt ends taped together. The pre-run wires will have the following functions; power, ground, stop, and brake. You will need to test each of these wires for the corresponding functions using a circuit tester like part # ALL640595. Once the wires have been identified all you will need to do is join the wires from under the dash to the brake controller.
For a brake controller that will work well for you, I recommend taking a look at the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885. The Tekonsha P2 is one of the most popular, well reviewed, and easy to use brake controllers on the market. The kit comes with everything you will need to install on your Hummer (i.e. wiring/mounting bracket). I have also attached an installation video of this controller installed on a similar vehicle for reference.
