Is Maximum Load on Trailer Tire Related to Speed

Updated 10/31/2017 | Published 10/30/2017

Question:

Are tire load ratings for a certain speed? I noticed carlisle gives max load ratings at 10 mph in one of their tire spec charts.

The trailer tires we have available will list a maximum load at a particular psi. The load capacity on these tires is not related to the speed of the trailer. They simply refer to the maximum amount of weight each tire is designed to support. Unless otherwise listed, trailer tires will typically have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph. We do not currently carry Carlisle Trailer Tires, so I am not too familiar with their ratings. I am not sure why they list the maximum load at 10 mph, as it seems unlikely that you would be loading up the trailer with it moving down the road.

For example, the Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWPRG235R16 has a maximum load of 4,400 pounds at 110 psi. It also features a maximum speed rating of 81 mph.

If you are looking for a particular tire size, please let me know and I will be happy to recommend a great tire for your trailer. I have also attached a couple articles on trailer tires that you might find helpful.
