How to Orient Axle for Installation

Published 10/11/2017

Question:

Thank you for your reply, but I have further question does it matter if the axle is under the springs or on top of the spring, as mine would be under the spring.

When installing an axle like the Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # 20440I-ST-60, you will want the arched part of the axle to be oriented further away from the ground with the spring seats closer to the ground (see attached picture). I have also attached a video of an axle being installed that you can reference.

Once you put a load on your trailer your axle will start to straighten out due to the downward force.

Typically the axle will be positioned above the leaf spring. However, if you are wanting to add some height to your trailer you can most certainly install the axle under the leaf spring using an Over-Under Conversion Kit. Part # K71-384-00 is what you want to use for a 2-3/8" diameter axle, but if your axle has a 3" diameter you will want to use part # K71-385-00 instead. Positioning the axle below the leaf spring will add height to your trailer that is equivalent to the diameter of your axle plus the height of your leaf spring stack.
