Winch Strap Compatible With Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14627

Updated 02/18/2026 | Published 08/28/2017

Question:

DL14627 lists a 38foot strap capacity, but know from experience the 25foot Boat Buckle strap is substantially thicker than most 2inch straps. If not, can you suggest another 1,600-2,000# winch model with the capacity for this strap?

You are correct that the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, Single Speed - 1,800 lbs. # DL14627 is rated for a 38 foot strap but that is using a strap similar to the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook, 2" Wide x 25' Long - 4,000 lbs. # DL24249. We don't have one that is that length, so I can't confirm physically but the manufacturer says that is the case.

The BoatBuckle Boat Winch Strap with Hook and Safety Latch - Loop End - 2" x 25' - 8,000 lbs # IMF14211 is thicker like a ratcheting tie-down strap and is twice the capacity on the same dimensions for length and width. This strap will fit on the 1800 lb winch and is the longest winch strap we carry.

8.5 Year Review: 1) The DL14627 is a beast. The frame plate CAN be bent under extreme loads, but apparently not catastrophically (like my last hand winch) and many years later is still going strong... - The supplied bolt for the strap is not sufficient for more extreme scenarios (1/4" galvanized I believe). It can bend, rust, and shear. Replace with a 3/8" SS (The largest that will fit), which will still bend in extreme uses, but not rust and shear. 2) The 25' Boat Buckle strap is also a beast, but slightly too big for this winch. You'll regularly be "fighting" to keep it within the spool's frame. If you're cognizant of that, it will last you a long time. I'm finally looking to replace my strap in the next 12 months after a long while of heavy use, primarily due to wear with the winch frame in the final few feet of the strap. 3) The combo would be very good (for less typical/more extreme usage). If you're needing a heavier winch + longer strap for conventional boat launches, this is probably an excellent choice that's problem free for years. - 8-9 years in much more extreme scenarios strikes me as pretty darn good too. Solid value for money. B
