Will the 2.047 inch Bearing Buddy Fit a Bore Size of 2.012 inches

Updated 07/11/2017 | Published 07/08/2017

Question:

I think the previous owner built this trailer from available spare parts, which leads me to suspect that I have two different hub bores for the single set of trailer wheels. The 1980A Bearing Buddy which I installed a few years ago still works great on the passenger side wheel, but recently fell out of the driver side. I did not notice a loose fit during installation, so still trying to figure out what went wrong. Vernier calipers tell me that the driver side hub bore is 2.012 inches in diameter. Will a 2.024 inch diameter Bearing Buddy fit into this hub bore?

I believe that the bearing buddy that you hub bore diameter that you saw was the 2.240 inch size, part # BB2240, which will be too big to fit in your hub bore size of 2.012 inches. The next step up from the # BB1980A that you purchased (which fit hub bore size 1.980) will fit the hub bore size 2.047 inches and is part # BB2047. Since you want the fit to be as accurate as possible this size will be too big. I called Bearing Buddy and my contact confirmed this.

Custom-built trailers can be frustrating at times when the builder just used spare parts, like you believe your previous trailer owner did, for the exact reason that you are experiencing. If it isn't done right it can cause major headaches later on. I recommend replacing your axle to help fix this problem and to avoid future problems as well such as the tires and suspension wearing unevenly.

If you decide to go this route I highly recommend our Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension, like part # A35RS545, because it is much easier to install than a standard axle is. Another perk to using this kind of system is extra ground clearance.
