Thank you Jon. I'd prefer not to purchase a cargo basket. The distance between cross bars is approx 30 inches. The distance between roof rails is approx 46 inches. What bag would you recommend thanks

If you are just looking for a rooftop cargo bag then you actually have quite a few more options. The only time that you are restricted to a bag that sits on your crossbars is if you have a window on your roof like a sun or moon roof. In that case I recommend putting the cargo bag in a cargo basket on the OEM crossbars of your 2017 Honda Pilot.

If you are needing a cargo basket then I recommend going with the Thule Roof Mounted Cargo Basket # TH859XT. This is confirmed to fit your Honda Pilot and has dimensions of 49" long x 40" wide x 6" deep. This will enable you to carry a cargo bag that is bigger than the Thule Outbound # TH868 that you referenced.

I recommend the Rightline Gear Sport 2 Rooftop Cargo Bag # RL100S20 if you end up using the cargo basket.

To determine what size cargo bag will fit on the roof of your Pilot all you will simply need to do is measure the space inside your OEM crossbars and compare that measurement with our cargo bag selection which is linked for you to look through.

For a cargo bag that will fit directly into the 30 inch x 46 inch space that you mentioned you can use the Rightline Gear Ace Jr # RL100A50. You will have an extra 6 inches of space which can overlap 3 inches over your crossbars on either end. This is okay as long as you do not put anything heavy on the crossbars. You want to put the majority of your cargo within that 30 inch space. You also might want to use the Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad # RL100650 to help protect your roof and help to keep your cargo bag as still as possible.
