How to Find Replacement Hub and Bearings for Boat Trailer

Updated 06/08/2017 | Published 06/06/2017

Question:

I acquired a boat trailer for a 14foot fiberglass boat for free and am trying to rehab the trailer home made. Im looking to replace the wheel bearings and 5 bolt pattern hub. The end of the axel has a three bolt pattern bolt plate welded to the axel. The mirror bolt on plate has the bearings and hub attached. What am I looking for?

To ensure that you get the correct hub assembly and bearings that will be compatible with your newly acquired trailer axle and spindle, you will need to locate or determine the bearing numbers. The easiest and most accurate way to do this is to simply take off the hub and check for the numbers that should be stamped into the bearings. If you cannot locate the numbers, you can also take a few spindle measurements to determine the bearing sizes. I have attached an image that shows where these measurements are taken. I recommend using a digital caliper like # PTW80157, as the measurements will need to be as accurate as possible.

For a matching hub, you will also need to determine its bolt pattern. You mentioned in your question that the hub uses 5 bolts. I have attached an article that explains how to determine its pattern.

For example, the etrailer.com Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-K uses inner bearing # L68149 and outer bearing # L44649. It is designed for 3,500 pound axles and has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

I have attached a couple of links on trailer hubs and bearings that you may also find very helpful.
