It sounds like you need to replace the brake actuator on your 1979 Rolco trailer. When you say the hitch portion are you asking about a surge brake coupler on the trailer? These were used a lot on trailers from that time.
I have attached a link to our product page for the surge couplers we offer. As you can see on the page, choosing the right coupler will depend on the size hitch ball you use and also the trailer tongue channel size. Also, the couplers have a weight capacity and vary by the way they are installed.
