Compatibility of Trailer Wheel Pilot Holes & Hubs on Torsion Axle

Updated 03/06/2017 | Published 03/02/2017

Question:

My hubs on new 3500# torsion axle are 6 on 5.5 with 3.625inch center hole, as best I can measure. The rims I see available for 6 on 5.5 have 4.25inch center hole. These hubs have studs. Is there any problem with using rims with oversized center holes? Also, given the preponderance of used 17inch tires, Id rather have 17 inch rims. Are there any that will fit this hub?

Expert Reply:

We offer four sizes of trailer wheel with the 6-on-5-1/2-inch bolt pattern: 14-1/2-, 15-, 16- and 16-1/2-inch. Some of these do have a pilot hole diameter that matches your, such as Dexstar wheel # AM20514 which measures 15 x 6. This wheel has a pilot hole of 3.65-inches. You do not want to use a wheel whose pilot hole is larger than the hub center. This would put too much weight load on the studs themselves.
