Why is Axle with Same Diameter as 3500lb Axle Rated at 2990lb

Question:
Is the thickness of the axle pipe wall vary in thickness , or is all 3500 lbs axles the same. I have an axle that is rated 2990 but is same diameter as 3500 which is 2 3/8.

For your 2990 lb rated axle with the same 2-3/8 inch diameter as 3500 lb axles, there may be other factors such as the outer wall or bearing sizes that ultimately reduce the rating of your particular axle below 3500 lbs.
If you are looking for replacement hub and drum assembly parts, I can try tell help you find them if you know the bearing numbers or spindle measurements on your trailer, but unfortunately I cannot guarantee that your axle has the same wall thickness as a standard 3,500 lb axle.
