Can this part be mounted in the engine compartment

Starter Solenoid # PK52315 could be mounted in the engine compartment as long as it is far away from hot parts such as the exhaust manifold and motor in general. Usually off near the battery or along the firewall somewhere are out of the way places a solenoid could be placed. Ideally, though, having it more protected from heat and the elements is the way to go.

All you really need is a battery isolation solenoid such as the #PK5231201 or Pollak #PK5230701. This will pull power from the truck's battery to your camper's battery when your '06 Chevy is running, but not when the truck is off.
