Recommended Hitch Mounted Carrier For Vespa Scooter To Carry Behind 2015 Ford Edge

Updated 06/22/2020 | Published 12/12/2016

Question:

Hi. I have a 2015 Ford Edge. It has a factory installed FoMoCo 2inch class II hitch. The placard on the hitch says that the maximum tongue weight is 350 lbs. That is also the weight listed in the Edge towing guide that came with the car. I want to put a lightweight aluminum hitch carrier on to carry my wifes 245 lb. Vespa. Seems like all the carriers I see specify class III or higher. If the Vespa and carrier weigh less than 300 lbs., isnt a class II hitch sufficient? Thanks.

We have a couple carriers that will work for your 2015 Edge and your wife's Vespa. You mentioned the weight of the Vespa at 245-lbs. Is that the weight of the scooter when it is full of fuel or with the battery included? You will want to make sure you do not exceed the capacity of the carrier or the trailer hitch on your Edge.

Since the motor on the Vespa is located right in front of the rear wheel, you want to make sure you place the scooter in the carrier so that the weight is evenly placed across the carrier.

We have a two carriers that would work with your Vespa scooter. The etrailer Motorcycle Carrier , part # e98873. This carrier has a 500-lb capacity and a 39-3/8 inch long ramp. It weighs about 58-lbs and comes with a threaded anti-rattle hitch pin.

The other carrier is the Ultra-Fab, part # UF48-979033. This carrier has a 500-lb weight capacity and includes a 37-1/2 inch ramp. This carrier weighs about 50-lbs and comes with a standard pin and clip.

Hitch locks can be be purchased separately for each of these carriers.

To add more security to the scooter when in the carrier I recommend Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ Web Clamps and S-Hooks like part # EM31353.

#17101 appears identical to the smallest detail in the picture to one I purchased or carry our Vespa on the rear of our rv. The given specs are also the same. It is too close to my vehicle when on the carrier. I bought an extension so that I can get it on the carrier. You cannot attach straps to the handle bars because your throttle and other stuff is the only parts not covered in the plastic ( or whatever) body. There is one hook underneath one side that I did not think suitable. The Vespa wheels do not readily the tracks so they do not readily fit because of their small diameter. I was very disappointed because it appears I may have to relent to my wife to recover my expenditures on Vespa et al. I cattier it to a “professional” and he Unsuccessfully attempted to find a solution.
