should the dis stay lighted up while on brake paddey should yhey be a red light on wind travle is hooked up

If you see a red dot in the bottom right corner that means a trailer is connected. If the screen was blank that would indicate that a trailer is not connected.
As controller applies more braking power to the trailer the number on the display will increase.
