Is Function of Blue Wire on 5-Way Connector, Part # 20017, For Reverse and How to Wire To 7-way

Updated 11/05/2010 | Published 11/03/2010

Question:

I have a 08 ford truck with a 7 pole RV plug on the back, I have already bought an adapter to convert it to a four or five wire plug. Im wanting to hook up back lights on my trailer. The adapter I bought was a Hopkins product and the diagram for it says you can hook up back up lights. I was needing a five wire trailer end plug to do this but, everything I see tells me the fifth wireblue is to disengage hydro trailer brakes. Can you please help?

The blue wire will connect to the reverse light circuit on the tow vehicle, but it will also send a signal to disengage the brake actuator on the trailer when you put your vehicle in reverse. So when you are in reverse, the trailer brakes will not be engaged.

You would need a 7-way adapter like Adapter 7 Pole to 5 Pole Flat, part # A75TB.

To wire the reverse lights on your trailer, you would need to connect the power wire from the trailer reverse lights, to the blue wire on the 5-way connector, part # 20017, using quick splices, part # SWC501915-1.

If you are going to be changing the connector on your trailer, you could just use 7-Way Round RV Style Trailer Connector - Trailer Side, part # A7WCB. To use part # A7WCB, you would just wire the reverse light wire to the center pole of part # A7WCB. This would be a direct connection from the trailer to your 2008 Ford Truck with 7 pole.

I have linked an FAQ on wiring that you may find as a good reference.
