Will Rust Buildup Prevent Brake Magnets from Functioning in Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies
Published 10/06/2010 >
Question:
If my brake magnet has a lot of rust on it will it still work? I have power going to my brakes but they are not working?

Excessive rust would definitely weaken the pull of the magnet, so I would recommended replacing the magnets on your trailer if they are severely corroded.
If you have power going into the magnet and it is not engaging at all, this again would be an indicator that the magnet needs to be replaced.
I would recommend cleaning your hub drum also when you are checking the magnets--some light sandpaper would work well.
I have provided a link below to the trailer magnets we currently carry, a video demonstrating a typical brake magnet replacement, and a help article for your reference.
