What is Minimum Trailer Axle to Frame Clearance for Leaf Spring Deflection
Published 06/30/2016 >
Question:
Im building an enclosed band trailer. I want to keep the floor height reasonably low. On a trailer that when loaded, is approx. 2800 lbs, how much room do I need from the top of my axle to the bottom of the frame rail the springs mount to. Im wondering how much does the axle move up and down / travel at the spot the springs are mounted. I have four leafs on my 1 3/4inch two eyelet leafs, I believe are rated at 1750 lbs. I dont want it to bottom out obliviously, but I dont want to go with taller hanger mounts than I have too. Thanks

Typical spring deflection is up to 1-1/2 inches when at capacity.
The recommended clearance with leaf spring suspension on an unloaded trailer is between 2 - 2-1/2 inches. You should have sufficient clearance with your loaded trailer, as leaf springs only tend to deflect 1-1/2 inch when carrying a load.
