If your weight distribution bars say the max load is 500 lbs, then the max load of both bars together is 500 lbs. not 1,000 lbs. When choosing a weight distribution system, it is key to know your trailer's loaded and ready to tow tongue weight. To find this weight you will need to add the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle in the back of your 2005 Ford Expedition and the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. Once you know the total tongue weight, it will be easier to choose a properly rated weight distribution system.
Your 2005 Ford Expedition can come with two different tow packages, the standard package or the optional tow package. The standard tow package for your vehicle as a tongue weight limit of 600 lbs. and the optional package has a tongue weight of 895 lbs. So if your vehicle has the standard tow package, I do not recommend towing your trailer with your 2005 Ford Expedition. Towing a trailer with a tongue weight over the maximum limit of your vehicle could damage your vehicle and the trailer.
If you have the optional tow package, however, you will be able to tow your trailer. If your travel trailer tongue weight is 700 lbs. and on average people can have around 0-200 lbs. of cargo behind the rear axle depending on what they are carrying, I recommend the Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System with 10,000 lbs. GTW and 1,000 lbs. TW # EQ37100ET. This system will be able to attach to any 2" trailer hitches and will work with your vehicle.
A 1-7/8" thin walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 is recommended for hitch ball installation and is not included with the weight distribution system.
I have attached our help article on determining tongue trailer weight and common weight distribution questions you may want to check out. I also attached a review video of the Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems for you to look at.
