Air Pressure and Air Bag Placement Recommendations for 5th Airborne Pin Box

Updated 08/03/2024 | Published 03/22/2016

Question:

You mention a pressure of 80-100 lbs. on the air bag. Is that with the trailer hooked up? My pin weight is around 2600 lbs. and with trailer hooked up the pressure is about 140 lbs. Not hooked up the pressure is 100 lbs. The bag is in the most forward adjustment hole. Should I move it back one?

The air pressure in the air bag inside of the 5th Airborne pin box # 5AB-E1621-610 should be adjusted after the trailer is hooked up to the hitch. The maximum air pressure for the air bag should not exceed 120 psi.

With a pin weight around 2,600 pounds the forward most air bag position should be fine. But you may get better results by moving the bag back one notch. The further back positions are designed for heavier pin weights (the maximum for this pin box being 4,200 pounds). I have linked the manual for this pin box for you and a help article on them.

I believe that the Reese pin box hitch has life time warranty on replacement parts? We have a customer with a leaking air spring ( single pod ) . I will look further for the part number.

@DaveF I'll need the part number of the pin box, and I'll need to know where it's leaking from.
