Selecting Replacement 3500-lb 5-on-4-1/2 Hubs for Older Trailer

Updated 01/18/2016 | Published 01/16/2016

Question:

I am doing some research to find my best option. I have an old trailer with what appears to be dayton hubs, i would like to replace those hubs with something that I can find tires and wheels for easier. I believe this is what I need. Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2.. any suggestions?

The key to selecting a suitable replacement hub for your trailer is to match up the main characteristics to your existing hub. You need to confirm axle weight rating (you indicated 3500-lbs), the hub's wheel bolt pattern (which you also did; 5-on-4-1/2-inches) and finally the hub's bearing set. The new hub must use the same inner and outer bearings as the existing hub in order for it to fit correctly on your spindles.

The linked photo shows the usual placement and appearance of bearing part numbers. This should help you confirm your bearings and allow you to select new ones that match. The linked page shows you all 3500-lb hubs with the 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern. Click on the type of hubs you need, idler hubs (no brakes) or hub/drums for drum brakes. Compatible wheel sizes are shown for each hub.

If your original hub/drum uses inner bearing L68149 and outer bearing L44649 then the part you referenced, Dexter # 84546UC3, will fit your spindles. This hub works with wheel sizes from 14-inches up to 17-1/2-inches.
