Hi, which hitch cargo carrier empty do you recommend that can clear the tailgate on a Toyota Tacoma?

The best way to determine if a carrier will clear the tailgate on your Tacoma is to take a quick measurement. Just measure from the top of the trailer hitch receiver opening to the top of your rear bumper. I have attached a photo that shows you how to measure the distance you need to know when selecting a cargo carrier.
Since you are concerned with the tailgate on your truck, you may want to consider a cargo carrier with a straight shank like the Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C18151. This is a 20 x 60 inch cargo carrier designed for 2 inch receiver openings. The side rail height on this carrier is 5-1/2 inches. This carrier also folds when empty for those times when you need additional room behind the Tacoma.
