Using a Hitch Extension or Extra Long Ball Mount, like the # BM20, will give you added clearance between the tow vehicle and your trailer which can be helpful when maneuvering but I can't say that it will actually give you more control or slow anything down.
Backing up a trailer is an art that I have yet to master and unfortunately other than disconnecting the trailer from your vehicle and using a product like the Trailer Valet Swivel Jack and Trailer Mover, # STC-V211, practice is the solution that I can offer for backing up a trailer.
Please keep in mind that if you choose to use a hitch extension, the overall capacity of your hitch will be decreased by 50 percent. The longer ball mount does not change your capacity.
