Published 12/03/2009 >
Question:
I would like to know what the height of the ball. My receiver top inside edge is 19 from the ground on the vehicle. I need to have the top of the ball 16.5 from the ground for the trailer. I need the height of the ball in order to calculate the amount of the ball mount.

The ball measures 2-3/4 inches from the ball mount surface to the top of the ball. I am glad to see that you are making sure you get the proper ball mount for your tow set up. The rule of thumb is to be no more than 2 inches over or under.
The easiest way to calculate this is to measure from the ground to the top of the inside of the receiver just like you did, then measure from the ground to the bottom edge of the coupler where it would be about flush with the ball mount. I would estimate that at 15 inches for your trailer using the 16-1/2 inches from ground to the inside of the coupler where the top of the ball would be.
A 3 or 4 inch should do nicely for you, like part # 2753. I have also included a link with images and instructions about ball mount measurements that may be helpful.
