Weight Distribution for a Car Trailer with a Channel Coupler 4 Inches Higher than the Trailer Frame

Have an issue with a homebuilt car trailer. Approx 1000 lbs tongue weight. Trying to find a WD hitch for it. It has an channel coupler similar to your T4846600 coupler, but no longer has the surge brake actuator. The problem is the trailer frame rails are probably 4 lower than the coupler height. What WD hitch can I use with that type of setup? Thanks

The way I would go about this is to lower your coupler height or use a coupler similar to the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ Pin - 2-5/16 inch Ball - Adjustable Channel Mount - 12,500 lbs, item # BD028585, and mount it so that the coupler is in the correct position to allow a weight distribution hitch to be used with the trailer and coupler. Make sure the coupler you select will accommodate the total weight of your trailer and the loads on it.
You would then use a weight distribution system like the Reese Weight Distribution System, item # RP66560, and use the weight distribution shank in the drop position to level the trailer for proper towing. The shank that comes with the Reese Weight Distribution System has a drop of up to 4 inches so you may need to purchase a weight distribution shank that will allow for the proper amount of drop to accommodate the trailer frame height when level and the vehicle receiver hitch height. The Reese Weight Distributing Shank, Extra Long Drop, 15,000 lbs., item # RP63971, would most likely accommodate the drop you require.
The Reese Weight Distribution System, item # RP66560, is a good choice for your trailer and can still be used if you ever decide to restore the hydraulic surge brakes on the trailer.
