Question:
I would like to clamp on a ratchet winch to my front cartop rack flat type crossbar, to pull up my 10ft kayak. I have a roller bar on the back, which will help a lot. I can push it on the rest of the way, once I get it up there. How can I clamp on the Dutton-Laison hand winch Im thinking that one will work for this purpose ? What would you suggest? Thank you for any help.

Since you likely won't have enough clearance for a winch that uses a standard rotating handle, a winch with a ratcheting handle like the # DL16003 would be your best bet. I'd recommend using a couple of U-bolts to attach the winch to the crossbar. Also keep in mind that your roof rack crossbars are meant to withstand a weight equal to their weight capacity bearing down on them. A set-up like you propose will put lateral force on the crossbar and roof rack. I'd proceed cautiously, and carefully observe the crossbar as you're winching the kayak up into place. If you see the crossbar flexing, stop winching.
