The maximum trailer hitch size your 2012 Toyota Corolla can accommodate is Class I. The one I recommend is the Draw-Tite # 24913. You will be able to fit Class-I accessories with the 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I have attached an installation video for you to look at.
I recommend checking your owners manual to verify the capacities of your 2012 Corolla. From what I could find, it looks like your Corolla has a maximum tongue weight of 100 pounds and maximum towing capacity of 1,000 pounds. Be mindful you don't exceed the tongue weight and maximum towing capacity when you are carrying cargo.
Since you will be adding a rear cargo carrier, I would go with the Curt carrier # C18145 because it is one of lightest carriers at 29 pounds. You will be able to carry up to 71 pounds of cargo safely. To secure your cargo I recommend the Erickson cam buckle straps with S-hooks # 05605 because they will provide peace of mind when traveling down the road and will have a safe working load limit of 300 pounds.
I have included some great articles and video reviews for you as well.
