Im planning on transporting a 16 foot canoe on the Yakima trailer. How far behind the trailer will the canoe extend? What is the maximum allowed by laws in Michigan?

I went to our warehouse and took some measurements of the Yakima Rack And Roll Trailer, part # Y08107. I have attached a photo of the trailer with the dimensions shown.
From the center of the hitch ball coupler to the center of the front crossbar in its forward most position it measures 83 inches. The crossbars can be spread 48 inches. This would give you 1-1/2 inches of trailer behind the rear crossbar. That means 70 inches of your canoe will hang off the back of the trailer if you place the center of the canoe evenly spaced between the crossbars. You have some room at the front of the trailer if you want to slide the canoe forward on the crossbars. I would say you can move the canoe about 8 to 10 inches forward which would mean you have about 5 ft of canoe off the back of the trailer.
The canoe carrier I recommend is the Yakima KeelOver Canoe Carrier With Tie-Downs, part # Y04069. This rack is designed for transporting a kayak or canoe with the hull facing down.
You will want to call your local Department Of Transportation to find out what the limits are for your canoe to extend off the back of a trailer.
