Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Ring Terminal

Michael: Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a very quick look at this Deka ring terminal. This ring terminal is going to allow you to easily connect your wires to a stud, so like on a battery or something like that where you need a nice solid connection. This does allow you to crimp the vinyl installation down onto your exposed wire. This is going to have an internal diameter right about 3/8 of an inch. So it's going to be good for your 3/8 inch diameter studs, will fit right up in there.

This is going to work for your 12 and 10 gauge wires, will fit right in there, allow you to crimp down on them and give you that nice secure connection to attach to your stud. That's going to complete our look at the Deka ring terminal. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com, thanks for watching.

  • How to Hardwire a 12 Volt Accessory Outlet in a Truck Bed
Only a 7-way trailer connector will have a 12-volt power wire ran to the connector. A 4-way trailer connector will not have a constant 12-volt power wire. As long as the 12-volt power wire running to the 7-way trailer connector is rated for the amperage required for your 12-volt accessory outlet then yes, you can use this wire for powering the circuit. Depending on how the vehicle is set up, your trailer connector may or may not still have power while the vehicle is off. To test this,...

  • Upgrading Big Tex #35SA Trailer With Brakes
It sounds like your Big Tex trailer did not come with brakes. Based on this, to convert your trailer with no brakes, to adding electric brakes, on your Big Tex 35SA trailer, the first thing you need is a left and right brake kit. You could use the Dexter 23-26-27 kit (includes left and right) which matches your Dexter axle 4” X 4” brake flange. However, for a little more I would recommend Dexter # 23-468-469 Nev-R-Ajust self adjusting brake kit. Most people do not want to have to periodically...

  • Connecting a Power Lead From an Electric A-Frame Jack to Trailer Accessory Battery
If you are using an internally grounded electric jack like the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack, part # UF38-944017, you simply run the power lead to the accessory battery on the trailer and connect it to the positive terminal using something like a ring terminal, like part # DW05705-1. You will also want to make sure the negative post of the battery is grounded to the trailer frame so the circuit is complete. This type of jack will only require the power lead wire to be connected as it...

  • Parts Needed to Allow Tow Vehicle Battery to Charge Trailer Battery While Driving
You may be able to use the existing 12V feed at the back of your truck to charge your trailer battery while driving but you will need to install a battery isolation solenoid to disconnect this line when the tow vehicle is off. Otherwise your trailer battery could drain the battery in the tow vehicle. You will also want to ensure that you are using a wire gauge heavy enough to pass the charging current to the trailer battery; 10-gauge would be the minimum. You can use part # PK5231201...

  • Recommended Circuit Breakers and Wiring to Install the 4-Way to 7-Way Curt Trailer Connector Adapter
Hey Galen! You can use the Wiring Kit item # 5506 to install the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter item # C57672. This kit includes duplex wiring for both the charge line and for adding a brake controller. The kit includes a 20-Amp item # PK54220, 30-Amp item # PK54230 and 40-Amp item # 9510 circuit breaker. The 20-amp breaker is used to power the brake controller for single and tandem axle trailers. The 30-amp is used to power the brake controller for use on a trailer with braking axles....

  • How to Access +12V Power Circuit in 7-Way Wiring to Power Fuel Pump
7-way trailer wiring includes a +12V auxiliary power circuit that can be used for a range of purposes from powering an electric jack to topping off a trailer-mounted battery. This circuit is handled by the contact at the 1:00 position as you look at the vehicle's trailer socket. The ground is at the opposite pin, the one at the 7:00 position. Please refer to the linked photo. For an easy way to access this power circuit to operate your fuel pump you could wire in a 7-way plug like # H20046...

  • How To Keep Towed Vehicles Battery Charged When Flat Towing
Yes, you can utilize the unused 12v pin on your 7 way and 6 way plug in order to keep your towed vehicle's battery topped off. Keep in mind, this will only act as a battery maintainer / tender but it will not charge a completely dead battery. It sounds like you are using a kit like Curt Tow Bar Extension Cord w/ Socket - Coiled - 7-Way RV to 6-Way Round - Cord # C59HR in which case you simply attach a wire to the 6 way center pin (12v) and then run it to the positive terminal on your tow...

  • Power To Brake Controller and Trailer Connector on a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500 Cut Out
The power for the brake controller and trailer connector on your 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is feed from two studs on the power distribution center (PDC) which is located under your hood, in the engine bay. The only thing that I can think of as to why both the power for the brake controller and trailer connector suddenly went out assuming there were no blown fuses is if the ring terminals on these studs somehow came loose. Therefore, you will want to check the flange nuts on both of...

  • Recommended Circuit Breaker and Wire Gauge for Wiring 7-way Trailer Connector
For a circuit breaker, I recommend using a 40 amp circuit breaker, like the Pollak 40amp In-Line Circuit Breaker # 9510. The wire that runs to the battery will connect to the gold post, and the line that connects to the junction box will connect to the silver post. Usually, 10 gauge wire is used for the 12V power. I recommend using # 10-1-1. This 10 gauge wire is sold by the foot. To make connections with this wire, you will want to use 12-10 gauge wire ring terminals # DW05705-1 or 12-10...

  • Replacing Wiring on Old Livestock Trailer with Electric Brakes
To replace the wiring in your old livestock trailer and install a 7-Way connector to use with your tow vehicles, I recommend using a 7-Way harness like the Hopkins 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20046. When installing the connector and harness on the trailer, you will want to use a junction box # 38656 and 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot), which will help protect the connection points and also give the installation a more professional look. The 10 gauge wire will be needed...

I can help you install a brake controller like the Tekonsha P3 on your 2015 Jeep Cherokee. For Brake Controller recommendations, I really like the # 90195. This brake controller is a proportional controller, which means whatever pressure you press the tow vehicle's brakes it will apply the same pressure and intensity to the trailer's brakes. It also has a customizable full display screen which provides you with full error messages instead of codes that need to be deciphered. First thing...

  • How To Ground Trailer Tail Lights Without a Ground Wire To a Wooden Surface
The Standard Trailer Light Kit with 25' Wire Harness part # TL29BK as I am sure you noticed grounds via the mounting hardware therefore there is not a singular ground wire. In order to attach this light to a wooden surface you will need to run a ground wire yourself up to the trailer tongue using the mounting studs on the back with ring terminals part # DW05705-1 and wire part # 12-1-1. The other option you have is to use the Peterson LED Light Kit for Trailers part # V944 which does have...

  • Is it Possible to Hook Seven-Way Directly to a Battery to Power Concession Trailer Lights?
It is possible to use a 7-way vehicle end connector such as # PK12-707E to hook up to a stand-alone battery for your lights. You would need to connect by using 10 gauge wire, # 10-2-1, and if you use a deep cell battery as you suggested, a pair of ring terminals such as # DW05705-1 would secure your wiring to the battery. For a more permanent setup, you can mount a battery box such as # DW03188 (the exact size would depend on the dimension of the battery) on the trailer so you do not have...

If the trailer also only has a 4-Way then it also has no wiring to the electric brakes. On the Tundra, to install a functioning 7-Way and brake controller you will actually need to use 4 to 7-Way adapter # 37185. Your factory 4-Way will plug into the back of this unit. You will then need to hardwire the remaining wires. The white wire needs to be grounded...

  • Trailer Brake Lights Do Not Work When Connected have a 96 ranger with seprate turn and brake
Whenever any type of adapter like # PK12716 is used to mate different types of connectors on the vehicle and trailer, connection problems can develop because of all the extra contact points. The best way to go is to install a new connector on the trailer that directly matches that on the tow vehicle so that you can avoid using an adapter. If the trailer side connector pin that corresponds with the 12-volt circuit is connected to the battery on the trailer, then you will not have to change or add anything. Since you have already tested the trailer brakes with a few different trucks by different manufacturers (2 of which have been used with an Electric Over Hydraulic (EOH) system), the problem should be with your trailer. The reason that they most likely recommended checking your trucks is that we have seen issues with OEM brake controllers from manufacturers working with EOH systems. • Adding Interior and Exterior Work Lights to Livestock Trailer
Considering how you'll likely be using this, if you don't already have an auxilliary battery on your trailer, you'll need to add one. You'll want a 12v battery, which can be sourced from a number of different places, but I recommend something that can at least handle around 50 amp hours. This eliminates the chance that you run your vehicle battery down and get stranded somewhere, in addition to straining that battery and creating the need for replacing it much sooner than you normally would...
