Note: To ensure proper axle alignment and suspension performance, leaf springs should always be replaced in pairs.

Leaf springs are an integral part of your trailer suspension system. The leaf springs provide the attachment points for your trailer's axle, suspending it from the frame of your trailer. Each spring flexes to absorb road shock as you travel, allowing the axle to move somewhat independently of the rest of your trailer. This helps to reduce wear and tear on the trailer and also ensures a smooth ride.

Double-eye leaf springs attach to hangers that are welded onto your trailer. One end of this spring will attach directly to the hanger with a suspension bolt. The other end will attach to shackle straps that are suspended from a hanger. These straps allow the spring to move and pivot so that it can better compensate for uneven pavement. If you have a tandem- or triple-axle trailer, the shackle straps will be attached to the equalizer that connects multiple springs.

To mount this spring, you will need hangers, shackle straps, and suspension bolts. If you are simply replacing a spring, you may still have hangers welded onto your trailer. You should, however, replace your shackle straps because they are usually the first component to wear out. You may choose to replace old suspension bolts as well. It is recommended that you replace the other leaf spring in your setup at the same time. Because springs can sag and elongate as they wear, this new spring may not exactly match the old one, and the alignment of your trailer could be affected.

If you are fabricating a trailer, you will need to purchase a hanger kit for installation. To determine the type of hanger kit that you need, you must know the specific type of leaf spring that you have, as well as your axle capacity. Depending on the hanger kits used with them, springs can be configured to work for single-, tandem- or triple-axle applications. Hangers and other suspension components can also be purchased separately if there isn't a complete kit that works for your setup.

  • How to Determine if Slipper Spring SP-177275 Will Fit Trailer
I can tell you how to determine if the 2-Leaf Slipper Spring for 1,000-lb Trailer Axles # SP-177275 will fit your trailer, though we do not have information regarding fits for individual trailers. The best way to determine if a slipper spring will fit is by measuring the length from the center of the spring eye to the end end of the spring, as you can see in the accompanying diagram. The best way to get an accurate length of a leaf spring is with the trailer up on jacks with the axle...

  • Determining Hanger Spacing for Replacement Leaf Springs on Trailer
The closest leaf spring set we have available to the 22-1/4 inch length you mentioned is the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # SP-113275. This double-eye leaf spring features a length of 23-1/2 inches from the center of the spring eye to the center of the other spring eye. I recommend making sure you are measuring your existing leaf spring from the center of one eye to the center of the other. This particular set is designed for 2,000 pound axles, so you will want to also make sure any new springs...

Hi Tim; I can get you everything aside from the hangers. All of our standard hangers are designed to weld on but you may be able to find that bolt-on style elsewhere online or at a local shop. Hangers like those do still exist although I'm not sure how easy they are to find. We don't have complete kits but I can piece it together for you. • Hanger Kit to Install Leaf Spring on Trailer that Has Slipper Springs
You could pretty easily install the springs you have but you will need to use a single axle trailer hanger kit like part # APS4 as the bushing sizes and hangers you have now won't work with the spring you have part # SP-113275.

  • Can 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring Replace 5-Leaf Spring
Hi Jim; a 3-leaf spring like the # SP-113275 can replace your current 5-leaf springs. The only possible benefit may be a little more structural integrity with the extra material but if they're rated the same it doesn't matter enough to worry about finding a 5-leaf. As long as you are not exceeding the 2,000 lb capacity of the leaf springs you're fine.

  • How To Determine Hanger Spacing for Single Axle Trailer Suspension Based on Leaf Spring Length
The trick for hanger spacing is to subtract around 3/8 of an inch from the spring length (eye to eye) and then use that dimension for the hanger spacing on a single axle trailer. So for a 23-1/8 inch long leaf spring a spacing of 22-3/4 inches would be the correct dimension to use.

  • Determining the Correct Leaf Spring Length for Trailer
There is no exact way to determine the leaf spring length. The best way to determine the length for a replacement is by measuring the existing leaf springs. The hanger distance and shackle length can help you get a good idea, but you're looking at an approximation. Those leaf springs appear to be in good shape, so assuming they are factory leaf springs I would continue to use them. When installed, the shackles in the rear should be in a position that will allow the suspension to move....

  • Trailer Leaf Spring Recommendations for a Boat Trailer with 1,900 Pound Boat
The leaf springs should be rated to match the axle on the trailer. Spring # e27SR is rated for 2,250 pounds per spring so it fits 4,500 pound axles. These springs would be overkill for a boat weighing up to 1,900 pounds and it would be a very stiff and jarring ride for your boat. Your trailer axle may have a capacity listed on it somewhere and if not then there should be some capacity information on a placard or sticker near the front of the trailer somewhere. Whatever the gross capacity...

  • Can Center Bolt Be Ran from the Bottom Up on Trailer Leaf Spring # SP-113275
Yes, if you look closely at some of the pictures you can see the center bolt for leaf spring # SP-113275 goes through the stack and into a nut on the bottom. So in other words it can be reversed. Please note it would be a good idea to secure the spring using vises or clamps in order to keep the spring stack in position and so no residual tension can cause a leaf to possibly cause an injury. Do not work on springs when they are under load (still on the trailer).

  • Should Equalizer and Shackles Be Replaced After Being Shoved Out of Position
Thank you for providing the picture. However you hit that wood it managed to shove the one side up so far it pushed the other side into that position which prevented your wheel from coming back down. I wouldn't say something was necessarily "wrong" other than the fact that the suspension was pushed in an abnormal way from the wood. Go ahead and inspect the shackles, bolts, and equalizer to see if there are any stress marks or anything indicating damage. If there wasn't a lot of lateral...

  • How to Choose the Best Tires, Wheels and Axle for a Homemade Jet Ski Trailer
Finding the ideal tires, wheels and axles for your trailer will depend heavily on the overall weight of the trailer. For example, a jet-ski can weigh as little as 400-500 lbs on the light end and around 1,000 lbs on the heavy end. You must also consider the weight of the trailer itself sitting on the axles. Also, keep in mind that if the axle is positioned properly, the tongue of the trailer should hold about 10 percent of the total weight. For example, let's assume that your jet-skis...

  • What Happens if Trailer Leaf Spring Shackle is Almost Flat
Hey Tom, thanks for the picture. So the problem will be that when you hit a bump the spring will run out of room to flatten out so the suspension will essentially get very hard at that point and the trailer will bounce pretty hard. I would recommend going with a shorter length spring or moving your hangers out further.

  • What Causes a Trailer to Bounce
A trailer can bounce if there is not enough weight on it. You see this particularly with utility trailers that are empty. The tire and wheel size would not automatically cause a trailer to bounce though usually you see smaller tires on smaller trailers and smaller trailers tend to be light weight. So again it really comes back to weight. It is also possible that there is too much tongue weight and/or the trailer is being towed nose down. This would limit the weight that is over the axle(s)...

  • Troubleshooting Front Wheels Lifting on Dual Axle Trailer
It sounds like your shackle straps are binding or flipping and this should not be, so you will want to determine the cause of your suspension issue. I recommend having it looked at because an axle off the ground and slamming down will cause damage over time. I've attached an article on suspension to assist.

I'll start this off by saying that often times when springs are worn, they will flatten out and get longer when measuring the distance between the eyes (make sure you are measuring the distance when the springs are unloaded- you will need to jack the trailer up or remove the spring altogether); additionally, the other thing to consider when choosing replacement leaf springs for your trailer is the capacity of the trailer.
