Can 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring Replace 5-Leaf Spring

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/02/2025

Question:

Hello, I have an old dual axle trailer that needs full suspension leaf springs, equalizers, links, bolts, u-bolts etc. The old springs are dual eye and measure 23-3/4 center to center might be a little flat 1-3/4 wide. The equalizer is 7-3/4 with 2-3/4 offset, 9/16 spring holes, but 3/4 center hole. The axle is 1-7/8 square, so need square u-bolts. My question is, the existing springs are 5 leaf, but the hubs are 4 bolt with L44643 outer bearings. Is there a benefit to 5 leaf springs vs lighter? Full load on the trailer will be about 2,000 lbs max including the trailer. Thanks.

Hi Jim; a 3-leaf spring like the # SP-113275 can replace your current 5-leaf springs. The only possible benefit may be a little more structural integrity with the extra material but if they're rated the same it doesn't matter enough to worry about finding a 5-leaf. As long as you are not exceeding the 2,000 lb capacity of the leaf springs you're fine.

Hey Jim, how did things turn out with the 3-leaf springs on your trailer? Did they give you the ride and support you were hoping for under load? Your feedback could help others comparing 3-leaf and 5-leaf setups for similar trailers.
