Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Is Trailer Tire Size 215/60-8 Better than 165/65-8
Hey William, the 215/60-8 tire size does have a higher weight capacity by a few hundred lb per tire. The speed rating is much better at 81 mph compared to 65 mph and the width is about 1.5 inches wider. It's definitely a solid upgrade. Id you have a 5 lug bolt pattern you'd want the part # AM3H323 or if you have 4 lugs part # AM3H290. In my opinion it's worth the upgrade for just the higher speed rating.

  • Can Malone Ecolight Kayak Trailer Swap to Larger Tire Size without Clearance Issues
Hey Corey, so the important info you need to know is that you want to keep at least one inch of clearance between the inner sidewall of the tire and the frame of your trailer for enough safe clearance and also that the offset of trailer wheels is always zero. What that means specifically is that the additional width of a new wheel and tire compared to what you have now will be split in two equally. So lets do some math...the current tire size you have now of 5.70-8 has a width of 5.8 inches...

  • Distance from Hub Face Surface to Edge of Rim and Tire on Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM3H323
I pulled a sample of this tire from our warehouse to take the measurements you need. From the rear rim surface that contacts the hub (near the bolt holes) to the innermost edge of the rim the distance is 4-inches. From that same point to the innermost edge of the tire the distance is 4-1/2-inches. The dimensions are noted on the linked photo.

  • How Much Offset Does the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire Have?
Hey Mike all of our 8" wheel tire combos like the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel item # AM3H323 have a zero offset. The tires are 8.9" wide so this will give you 4.45" of backspacing. This wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern with a 1,040 lbs capacity. What are you looking to install this wheel on?

  • Can I Change out My 4.8-8 Tire and Wheel with 5 on 4 1/2" Bolt Pattern for a 215/60-8 Bias?
Hello David, The Kenda 215/60-8 tire on the 8" white wheel # AM3H323 will bolt right up to your trailer since it has the same 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern as your current 4.80-8 setup. The main differences come down to size: the new tire is about 2 inches taller overall and quite a bit wider, roughly 8.5" compared to your current 4.7". That means your trailer will sit just over an inch higher, and you’ll need to make sure you’ve got enough clearance above the tire for the suspension to move,...

  • What Capacity Axle is Generally Used with Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 White Wheel
Hey Christopher, when picking out a hub you don't start with the wheel generally. You need to find a hub that fits the spindle on your current axle which the easiest way to do that is to base it off of the axle capacity that is on the trailer. Hopefully it's 2,000 lb like what the # AM3H323 was generally designed to fit like with the hub part # CE13210 fits. Larger capacity axles would not have hubs that would fit behind an 8 inch wheel. What capacity axle do you have?

  • Availability of Offset 8" Rims for 215/60-8 Tires
Hello again Doug; we do not carry any offset wheels you could substitute for the # AM3H323. Most trailer wheels have 0 offset, especially in the smaller wheel and tire sizes. You may be able to find some out there but I'm not sure if anyone makes any. You could also try adding in a spacer depending on how much clearance you need but that isn't something that we offer.

  • Best Replacement 4.80-8 Tire for a Boat Trailer
Hey David. The Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 item # AM3H323 is going to be a bit bigger but it might still be able to replace your 4.80-8 tire with a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern. A 4.80-8 tire is going to measure 16.14" x 4.72". A 215/60-8 tire measures 18.1" x 8.9" wide. This means you're going to need an extra 2.09" between the closest portion of your trailers frame and the back of your current 4.80-8 tire and an extra 1" between the bottom of your fender...

  • Recommended Wheel Tire Combo w/ Less then 18 Inch Diameter for Storing a Trailer
The closest wheel tire combo we have to 18" in overall diameter without going over is the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire item # AM3H220. It is 16-1/2", has a 8" white wheel, with a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern. This wheel tire combo has a 800 lbs capacity each so two of them will give you plenty of capacity for your 1,400 lbs trailer while sitting in storage.

Harbor Freight trailers have a bolt pattern of 4x101.6 (or 4 on 4 inch) or the 5 on 4-1/2 inch if you have 5 lugs. . The 225 x 8 isn't a size we carry, but we do have the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H290 which have a zero offset. This will give you 4.45 inches of backspacing since the tires are 8.9 inches wide. The same is true of the 5 lug wheel and tire # AM3H310.

  • Replacement Tire for a 18.5-8.5-8 Tire
Based on the tire info sticker that you attached it looks like you are looking for a replacement tire for your 18.5-8.5-8 tire size. The 18.5-8.5-8 tire has an overall diameter of 18.5 inches, an overall width of 8.5 inches and fits an 8 inch diameter wheel. The closest size tire I would have is the 215/60-8 bias tire. • Recommended Tires And Wheels To Replace 18.5/8.5-8 Tires On Triton Trailer
The tire size you can use as a replacement for your triton trailer is a 215/60-8. If you want just the tire, I recommend part # AM1HP28 which is a Load Range D tire. This 8-ply tire has a load capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. For a Load Range C tire only I recommend part # AM1HP26. This is a 6-ply tire and has a maximum load rating of 935 lbs at 50 psi. Both of these tires are bias-ply tires and will work on the rims you have for your tires. If you are looking for a wheel/tire combo...

  • Does 8" Trailer Tire Need to be Upgraded for Safe Travel on a Long Highway Trip
Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out! A common misconception is that bigger tires/wheels means they are better. While bigger tires can generally handle more weight, as long as a tire isn't being overloaded or the max speed is exceeded then the tire will be perfectly safe to use. We've actually had instances where using a larger tire/wheel just causes a bigger headache because then you might have to deal with a different bolt pattern, larger hub size, or even the tire being too wide for...

  • Can 5.70-8 Tire/Wheel Combo Be Replaced With 215/60-8 Combo On Small Trailer
I do not think the diameter of the tire will pose any problem since a 215/60-8 tire is only about .20 of an inch bigger diameter. The problem you may have is the width of the rim. the width of a rim for the 5.70-8 wheel is 3-3/4 inches and the width of a rim for the 215/60-8 tire is 7 inches. The additional 3 plus inches may cause issues for clearance on the fenders and also on the inside of the wheel well. You may want to check the clearance you have with the smaller tires to be sure....

  • What Is The Smallest Available Radial Trailer Tire?
We do have several 215/60-8 tires like the # AM3H323 but nothing in a radial. The smallest radial tire that we stock is a 145/80-12 in part # AM31202. This would be a fairly significant change in tire size. The 215/60-8 measure about 18.1" in diameter and 8.9" wide. The 145/80-12 measure about 21.3" diameter and 5.7" wide. It really comes down to how much clearance you have in your wheel well. Going to larger tires is possible, but we have to have at least 3" of clearance between the...

  • Replacement 5.70-8 Tires for a Taylor Dunn B36 Electric Industrial Cart
If you just wanted to get the tires and not replace the wheels you can use # AM10013. This is a 5.70-8 tire, load range D, with a capacity of 1,075 pounds at 100 psi. Four of these will have a capacity of 4,300 pounds so they can handle the 3500 pound total of the cart when fully loaded. • Will an 8 Inch Trailer Wheel Fit on Hubs for a 3,500 Pound Axle
Are you using hub and drum assemblies or just regular hubs? If you are using hub and drum assemblies then to fit an 8 inch wheel they would have to be very small. We have just one hub and drum assembly that fits 8 inch wheels, # 8-271-7UC3-EZ, and it is for 2,000 pound EZ lube axles. Hub and drum assemblies for 3,500 pound axles are going to require 13 inch or larger wheels. • Does the Center Pilot Hole of a Trailer Wheel have to be Exact
Not exactly. A Pilot hole that is 2.80 inches is going to be 0.05 inches larger than a 2-3/4 inch pilot hole. But the only way to get that accurate of a measurement is to use dial or digital calipers. If you measure with a ruler or tape measure you will not be able to get the most accurate measurement. Another issue is that some times the pilot hole dimension does not even matter. If the wheel attaches to the hub using lug nuts then the pilot hole can be larger, just not any smaller. If...
