Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Replacement Trailer Tire Recommendation for a 21 Year Old 20.5x8x10 Tire
You definitely want to replace all of your trailer's tires ASAP as a tire's life is generally only limited to 6 years old before it needs to be replaced. The highest weight capacity tire we offer in your tire size of 20.5x8x10 is the Load Range E part # AM1HP56 which has a capacity of 1,650 lbs at 90 psi. This size is the same as the modern equivalent 205/65-10 which is what this product advertises as it's size. You should note that a trailer tire has to be inflated to it's max psi at...

  • Is Powder Coated Wheel or Galvanized Wheel Better for 205/65-10 Trailer Tire
Between the white powder coated wheel on the Kenda # AM3H430 and the galvanized wheel on the Kenda # AM3H440 you are better off going with the galvanized wheel. Galvanized wheels offer the utmost in protection against rust, which is particularly important when it comes to boat trailers or any situation where the wheel is going to consistently be in contact with moisture. The process of galvanizing the wheel is going to ensure better durability over the course of time than a powder coated...

  • Recommended Wider Tire Upgrade for Small Trailer Tires 4.80x12
Your current tires have a width of 4.8" with outer diameter (when inflated) of 20.7". The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM3H430 have the same bolt pattern and re 20.6 inches diameter with 8.3 inch width. This is a smaller rim but the overall dimensions will be good for your trailer. If you want the same size wheel then I recommend the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D # AM31199DX....

  • Recommended Tire Upgrade for a Pontoon Boat Trailer
As you do not look to have any fenders on your trailer, you may be able to go with a larger tire and wheel combo. However, you do want to have at least 3 inches from the top of the tire to the bottom of the closest part of either the trailer or the actual boat. Less than that can cause the tire to make contact with things when going over bumps. With that all being said, I do not think the 13 inch wheel will work as it is significantly larger than the other two. That also being said, the...

  • Recommended Trailer Wheel and Tire For a 1994 Coleman Pioneer Arcadia With a Higher Weight Capacity
We do carry the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H430 which is a load range D version of the # AM3H390 with a load range C. Both tires have the 81mph speed rating but the load range D is capable of supporting 1,320lbs per tire versus 1,100lbs on the load range C. Do understand the higher load range will not increase any weight ratings given by Coleman on your 1994 Pioneer Arcadia. Using a stiffer tire will also cause the suspension to be stiffer and as most trailers...

  • Should Kenda 205/65-10 Tire & Wheel be Balanced
While not technically absolutely necessary, I do recommend balancing the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H430. Trailer tires don't come balanced, and some people don't balance them at all, but doing so is a good idea to help ensure the tire wears evenly for the best performance. The easiest way to do this is with balancing beads: - Counteract Tire Balancing Beads for Tandem Axle Trailers - 4 Tires # CA68VR It says for 4 tires but that just means it comes with...

  • Tire and Wheel Recommendation To Replace 20.5x8x10 Trailer Tires and Wheels
For the 20.5x8x10, the new size is a 205/65-10. This would be the better tire for the long drives you plan on because it is a wider tire that will offer more stability. You can also get higher load capacities with the wider tire in this case if needed. I recommend the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP56, for just a tire. This tire has a load capacity of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi. It is designed to fit on 10 by 6 inch rims. Trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum psi rating...

The 20.5x8-10 size tires on your pontoon boat trailer are an older tire size that is comparable to the 205/65-10 tire size. We do carry 205/65-10 tires to replace your 20.5x8-10 tires, but you will first need to determine the weight capacity of your axle. This will ensure that you choose a set of tires that are rated for the same weight as your axle. • 12 Inch Trailer Tire w/ High Load and Speed Rating
You are correct, the 5.30x12 is the SAE nomenclature, while the 145/80-12 is the closest metric equivalent. The two are approximately the same size with the 5.3x12 being about a tenth of an inch narrower and a quarter of an inch taller than the 145/80-12, so either would be a fine replacement for your current size. I'm not sure which two tires you were comparing to get the size differential but a tire's speed rating can vary between different manufacturers of the same tire size, between...

  • What is the Speed Rating of the Kenda 205/65-10 Load Range D Tire
I reached out to my contact over at Kenda for clarification on this and they mentioned that all of the Kenda 205/65-10 tires (LR C, LR D and LR E) have a speed rating of 81-mph unless otherwise noted on the tires. The Kenda 205/65-10 Tires- Load Range D # AM1HP54 would likely be the best solution for you because of the added capacity of the tires and the 81-mph rating; this tire is available with a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern wheel using part # AM3H430.

  • Replacement for 20.5 x 8-10 Tire and 5-Lug Wheel
So you mentioned wheel, though the 20.5 x 8-10 size you mentioned is actually a tire size, which leads me to think you are looking for a replacement wheel and tire of that size. Since that's an older tire size, what you will need is the modern equivalent, a size 205/65-10 tire, along with a wheel that the tire will fit on. We have just 205/65-10 tires, or just the 5-lug 10 inch rim, or a combination of the tire and rim together if that is what you are looking for. Here are the options...

  • Trailer Tire Size 215/60-8 vs 205/65-10 on a 2 Place Snowmobile Trailer
If clearance at the wheel wells and the additional inch of height at the coupler and floor is not an issue then larger tires are a good option. Larger tires create less friction as you travel because the number of rotations to go the same distance decreases. A 205/65-10 tire has a diameter of 20.6 inches and width of 8.3 inches. The original 215/60-8 tires have a diameter of 18.2 inches and a width of 8.5 inches. Since you have the clearance, I do recommend upgrading the tire size using...

  • How to Select Size, Load Rating and Speed Rating for Special Trailer Tires on Pontoon Boat Trailer
12-inch trailer tires are in much wider use than 10-inch tires but the tire size in itself is not really what matters, apart from them fitting properly inside the fenders or wheel wells. What is most important in selecting trailer wheels/tires is having ones with the appropriate weight load range rating for the actual loaded weight of the trailer with the boat, and having tires that are rated for your typical driving speed. Some trailer tires are rated only to 65-mph but others can be rated...
