Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I couldn’t be happier with the wheels/tires I purchased. The galvanized finish is nice and shiny. They almost look polished. The tires felt great. Nice and smooth while towing up to 80mph. Had no issues at all on my trip. Huge thank you to Brent J who helped me purchase them, and provided excellent customer service.

We ended up selling this pop-up after about a year and upgraded to a 17’ hybrid camper. I purchased the same wheels and possibly the same tires in a 16” and they have been great as well. The welds weren’t as clean on the wheels this time, but they have functioned perfectly at a great price. I would definitely purchase again.

by:

Just got my trailer tires mounted on galvanizing wheels. Incredible fast shipment and great packaging so that they arrived showroom perfect. The best part is that the eTrailer price was the best.

It has been a year and the wheels are still beautiful. The tires are wearing great and tow easy, even up to 80 mph I have the ticket to prove it.

by:

I ordered these to place on my boat trailer. I used them on my 2012 Trailstar trailer which carries my Tracker bass boat. It had load range C tires. I wanted to upgrade my tires and this item was exactly what I wanted. These fit perfectly. The tires were “fresh”....meaning that they were made only a months ago. The finish on the rims was much better than I was expecting. The welds on the back side of the rims looks to me to be quality work.

It’s been a year and I have absolutely no complaints. I would definitely purchase these again.

by:

First off, the tires are 2 years old! Second the wheel tire package are not balanced. You need to do better for the price.

Typically when we receive the tires in from the manufacturer they will be 18 to 24 months old. They are stored in controlled temperature warehouses and do not suffer from dry rot. They will still have a 5 year warranty on the tire against defect. It is true that trailer tires with rims do not come balanced. Since the tires are on a trailer it is less likely to feel the vibrations from unbalanced tires versus when you are in a passenger style vehicle. You can choose to have them balanced if you prefer. Remember that many trailer wheels are centered by the position of the lug bolts [these wheels are lug-centric] and not the center bore of the wheel. For best results, have them balanced using a pin plate adapter. This mimics the way a lug-centric wheel is mounted to a hub. If you have any other questions or concerns please let me know.

I purchased the tire and rim for a spare outfit for my boat trailer. I have not had to use it yet which is a good thing but it is the right size and it gives me the peace of mine that in case I need it I have the right one.

Look great. Higher load rating than my previous tires. We shall see

Excellent product. Good tire wear and very happy with load capacity

by:

Tires look great, would have given 5 stars but the finish on the wheels are uneven kind of a stained look. One wheel is shinier than the other. Inner part of one wheel had a few chips in finish

by:

The tires I purchased work out great for my snowmobile trailer. They function and look great.

by:

Packed well, prompt delivery. Product looks to be quality. Smooth, easy transaction. I’ll be back for my other trailer needs.

by:

Service was great and the price was right. The shipping was on time and I really like the way the tires ride.

This is a spare for the kayak trailer built earlier this year. Same tires were purchased previously, and they work well! It's easy to find what I need on this site, quick delivery and lots of follow up by customer service after the purchase to ensure I'm satisfied.

by:

very happy with this tire & wheel combo....love having them come mounted and ready for installation also the galvanized rims give the appearance of chrome wheels also a plus

by:

Karrier tires look perfect - a 5.0. One galvanized wheel coating looks a little sloppy on inside of rim, which will not be seen. Otherwise just fine. Delivery one day early and boxes in great shape. Overall a 4.8

by:

My order was received ahead of schedule which was excellent. Perfect communication. The tires were excellent. The galvanizing isn't high quality from from 6 feet away it looks good. This is the best place to order parts for my pop up period.

by:

Completely happy with the tires and wheels. Run em on my pontoon boat. Great buying experience and arrived on time, mounted and ready to install. Made several lake trips, including one trip to Lake Havasu in July. Tires held up in the hot summer and a 700 mile trip!!

by:

Next day free shipping? WOW! etrailer processed my order lightning fast and I guess I'm the lucky guy that lives close to a warehouse. Spare and spare tire mount came well packaged. Thanks etrailer!

by:

I needed to replace the worn out tires on my flatbed utility trailer and had been concerned about the weight capacity of the load range C bias-ply tires that were installed by the local tire shop just after I bought the trailer - combined 2700 lbs on 3500 lbs axles, 5400 lbs total. A couple of times, I've had 4000 lbs of landscaping bricks from the home improvement store plus the 1300 lbs trailer weight rolling down the highway. With these load range D tires, the combined tire weight rating is now 6400 lbs. I'll gladly pay the extra few dollars per tire for the LR D's over the LR C's for that piece of mind plus these galvanized wheels look a lot better than the old white rusty wheels do.

by:

Tires were ordered on Good Friday and showed before noon on Tuesday. Great service as expected.

The tires are very nice and there was no shipping damage. I think they will work great on my camper for this years long distance tow.

Only little complaint is that the rims don't look like a lot of finish work went into them. They are rough, almost look like they were spray painted rather than galvanized. Surface has drips and runs. But otherwise is well covered and I don't anticipate them rusting like my old white painted rims did.

They may look better with a bit of hand polish work. But they are trailer tires not mag rims on a GTO so I can live with it.

  • Recommended Replacement For P135/80R13 Tires On A Small Trailer
Unfortunately, we don't currently carry P135/80R13 tires but we do have a option that's just a bit wider at ST175/80-13 with part # AM31994. You will need to check if you have the extra clearance to allow for a slightly large tire and that your current bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. The "P" in your tire code designates that it's for a passenger vehicle so you shouldn't use those on your trailer, you'll want tires with "ST" instead.

You will more than likely be able to replace the 175/80/13 tires on your Jayco X17Z with a 185/80/13 tire, but you will want to take a few measurements on your trailer just to confirm. The 175/80/13 tire like the # AM31994 is 7" wide and 24.1" tall where the 185/80/13 tire like the # AM10208 is 7.2" wide and 24.7" tall. • What is the Weight of the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 LR-D with a Galvanized Steel Wheel
Most wheels and tire combos of this size will weigh roughly the same, but it mostly depends on the wheel. The # AM31994 you were looking at has a galvanized steel wheel and weighs roughly 31-lbs. This is a Load Range D tire. Similarly, the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM31952 weighs 30-lbs, so there's only about a 1-lb difference.

  • Best Trailer Wheel and Tire for Replacing B78-13ST
Radials are definitely better for your application. At this point it's actually pretty rare that the bias ply is the better way to go but for what you mentioned radial is better for highway use. So for a wheel and tire with a radial construction, a higher speed rating of 81 mph, and a 5 lug bolt pattern the Karrier part # AM31994 would be your best option.

  • Which Trailer Tire Size Replaces B78-13B Tires
B78-13 is an old tire size designation that isn't used much anymore. The modern trailer tire equivalent size is ST175/80-13. All of the tires on the trailer should be the same size, load range, and construction type (radial or bias ply). Having one that is a different size can cause uneven tire wear, tracking problems (how the trailer follows the tow vehicle), potential suspension issues, and unspecified weight carrying capacity. The 175/70-13 isn't a trailer tire size. If the tires on...

Adding larger wheels/tires to a trailer really comes down to fender clearance. The recommended fender clearance is about 4" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender and then about 1" from the tire to the inside of the frame. The next size up from a 4.80-12 is a 175/80-13, the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel part # AM31994 is what I recommend. It measures 24" diameter x 7" wide which is 3.5" diameter x 2.2" wide larger than the existing.

Radial tires can be used instead of bias tires on a trailer. If most of your driving is highway driving they would actually be preferred. Radial tires have better ground contact and run cooler.
