Electric Jacks vs. Manual Jacks

Whether you're gearing up for a weekend camping trip, hauling equipment for work, or embarking on a year-long cross-country adventure, having the right towing setup can make all the difference. And when it comes to smooth, hassle-free towing, one (sometimes-overlooked) piece of equipment can make or break your experience—the trailer jack. But with so many options out there, how do you know which one is right for you? Do you keep it simple with a reliable manual jack, or opt for the ease and efficiency of an electric model? The best choice depends on your setup, your travel plans, and how much effort you want to put in when hitching and unhitching. Let’s break it down so you can find the perfect fit for your needs. Here's a quick comparison of the differences between electric and manual trailer jacks:
Electric vs Manual

Best Uses for Electric Jacks

If you’re towing a larger travel trailer, a cargo hauler, or a really hefty utility trailer, then an electric jack is going to be your best friend. Trying to level a big trailer by hand takes a lot of effort, which is why many of the “seasoned” haulers prefer to use an electric jack. Simple, push-button operation can save you a lot of time and effort, so electric jacks are especially convenient for full-time RVers, busy families, and those with limited mobility. Electric jacks are typically designed for use on A-frame trailers, so keep that in mind when you're considering your options. Installation is very simple (it’s pretty much the same process as installing a manual jack, plus you have to connect a couple wires). They’re also really great if you need to hitch and unhitch your trailer frequently. And if you rely on a weight distribution system, an electric jack isn’t just helpful—it’s borderline necessary. When you’re setting up a weight distribution hitch, you have to lift your trailer’s tongue and the back of your tow vehicle at the same time in order to attach and adjust your spring bars. Doing this by hand takes a lot of strength, and you run the risk of accidentally crushing your fingers and toes. Using an electric jack to raise everything up saves you time and effort, and makes the whole process a lot safer. Plus, many electric jacks come with extra features like LED lights for nighttime set-ups, automatic stop capabilities, and memory features so you can preset your jack ahead of time.

Pros of Electric Jacks

  • Ease of Use — No manual cranking needed, just press a button
  • Speed — Lifts and lowers trailers more quickly than a manual jack
  • Great for Heavy Trailers — Handles larger loads with ease, making them ideal for travel trailers and cargo haulers
  • Great for Trailers with Weight Distribution — Makes it much easier and safer to set up your weight distribution system
  • Extra Features — Many electric jacks come with LED lights, memory functions, and automatic stop features

Cons of Electric Jacks

  • More Expensive — Electric jacks cost more upfront
  • Requires Power — Needs a functioning battery or onboard power source
  • Potential Maintenance — More moving parts means a greater chance of mechanical or electrical issues over time

Best Uses for Manual Jacks

If you like to keep things simple, a manual jack is a no-fuss, budget-friendly solution that still gets the job done. Most are easy to install—just bolt them onto your trailer’s A-frame and you’re good to go, no wiring required. They’re a great match for small utility trailers, lightweight campers, and boat trailers that don’t need a ton of lifting power. Known for their durability and low-maintenance design, manual jacks are perfect for anyone who’d rather spend their time on the road than doing trailer maintenance. They’re also a solid choice for those who tow occasionally, prefer a more hands-on setup, or just want a system that doesn’t depend on power. And if you’re heading off-grid—whether that means overlanding, boondocking, or just navigating rugged terrain—it’s hard to beat the reliability of a manual jack when you don’t have access to supplemental power.

Pros of Manual Jacks

  • Affordability — Manual jacks are budget-friendly and widely available
  • Durability — With fewer moving parts and no electrical components, they require little maintenance
  • No Power Needed — Since they don’t require electricity, manual jacks work in any situation (even when your trailer battery is dead)

Cons of Manual Jacks

  • Require Physical Effort — Cranking a jack by hand can be pretty tiring, especially when you’re dealing with heavier trailers
  • Time-Intensive — Raising and lowering a trailer manually takes longer than pushing a button on an electric jack. This can get really old when you’re hitching and unhitching your trailer frequently

So Which Jack is Right for You?Choosing between a manual and an electric trailer jack comes down to your specific needs. If you’re on a budget and don’t mind a little elbow grease, a manual jack will serve you well. However, if you tow frequently or have a heavier trailer, an electric jack is worth the investment for its convenience and ease of use.
