Tire Chains for snow and ice traction

When roads turn icy, tire chains add bite that even 4WD and good tires can't match. Look for self-tensioning, drape-over styles and Class S options for tight wheel wells, or clearance-friendly designs that avoid the inner sidewall; cables work in a pinch but aren't as durable. Thicker links boost traction at the cost of a rougher ride; test-fit at home and use tensioners for a snug fit.
Fit the chains evenly, drive slowly, then stop and readjust; repeat until snug. Use tensioners to reduce shifting. Zip tie or trim any excess chain at the inside adjuster so it doesn't contact brake hoses. Some lower tire pressure for a tighter initial fit and air back up after. Check for anything loose—one rotation with slack can cause damage.
Installation can be straightforward, and self-tensioning, drape-over designs are very easy to mount. Practice somewhere dry and warm before a trip. Avoid stopping in several inches of snow to install. Tensioners help keep things tight. Small 2x4 blocks to roll onto can make positioning easier. Removal can be fiddly; a little practice helps.
Tire chains provide stronger traction and are more durable than cables. Cables can work if required but are often a one-time-use type solution. If your manual limits what you can run, choose low-profile options or external-mount styles that meet those limits. Use chains only when necessary and keep them dry when not in use.
Choose low-profile, Class S-compatible options or external-mount chains that don't wrap around the inner sidewall. Some manuals state tire chains cannot be used; in those cases, spring-style devices may be acceptable if the device manufacturer recommends them. For very tight wells, external-mount designs help with clearance and wheel protection.
