Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution - WD With Sway Control - C17422 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C17422. This is the Curt Weight Distribution System. It's going to come with sway control, the trunnion bar design. This unit's going to evenly distribute the weight over the axles of the tow vehicle and the trailer for stability and control. Ultimately, it's going to help create a more level ride for both the tow vehicle and the trailer. Now the first one, sway control is going to reduce sway caused by winds, curving roads, and sudden maneuvers. The sway control system is made up of this part right here; these 2 pieces which attach to the trailer frame with the hardware, and then this system is going to be held in place on the weight distribution system at that point there with a spring clip.

Then this socket is going to attach to this ball with the spring clip. It can be easily removed by releasing the 2 spring locking pins. It does have the adjustable tension that's going to let you create the perfect degree of control and resistance, and it's going to have the integrated handle that's going to engage and disengage the system. Now, sway control cannot be used on trailers with surge breaks and the sway control must be removed when towing in slippery conditions such as wet, icy, gravel or snow covered roads. The trunnion spring bars are going to be constructed of solid forged steel for strength and durability. You can adjust the spring bar tension by switching the lengths here in the left chains to fine tune the system.

The left brackets are going to come with 2 different sizes of bolts. We got a 2-inch bolt and a 2-inch long bolt, a set of each. You can use the 4-inch long bolts for your traditional A-frames. They just go here on the backside. Just thread those in, tighten them down to get it secured.

You can use the 2-inch long bolts for larger A-frames. The lift brackets are going to take up about 4 inches along the trailer frame, and they're designed to fit trailer frames no wider than 2-1/2 inches. It's going to come off up your snap-up lever. This has been an easy installation by reducing the amount of lifting that's required by the trailer jack here on the brackets to get the chains in place with the proper tension applied. Snap up lever goes there. It gives you plenty of length, that way you can gain the proper leverage that you need to get those in place. You can also use that snap-up lever to disengage the system.

The brackets are going to be held in the up position with the clips, so to loosen it up or to remove just under that clip, use the lift lever, the snap-up lever, to lower that down and then you can release the chains. This does come in handy, keeps you a little bit away from the system. It gives you that safe distance you needed for operation. Again, it's just going to help ease the installation. Here at the head assembly, we can achieve the desired tilt that we need. It's going to come with 2 adjustment rods, a short one and a long one, as well as 2 washers. By using the different combination of short and long and washer combination, you can see here that on the tilt adjustment instruction sheet, it's going to walk us through what each combination can achieve for us. If we just use the short rod, it's going to give us a drop distance of 8.8 inches. We can use the short rod with 1 washer or 2 washers. We can use the long adjustment rod by itself or with 1 or 2 washers. It shows us anywhere from 8.8 inches of drop to 15.2 inches. It's a really nice design. The rods are going to install in the hole right here on the head assembly directly under the included 2-5/16 inch ball. It's going to come with the set screw down there. Tighten that down to get it set. That's going to be in the threaded hole here at the bottom of the head assembly. You can get the tilt that you need. Everything is going to be coated in a carbide powder-coated finish, so it's got the powder-coated steel. It's coated to resist rusting and corrosion and last a long time. When it comes to the tongue weight capacity for the unit, we're looking at 1,000 pounds to 1,500 pounds. Gross towing weight is 10,000 pounds to 15,000 pounds. The unit is designed for 2-inch by 2-inch hitches that are ready for use with weight distribution systems. You can see that I got the small ball up here. Again, that's for the sway control system. That can be applied to either side of the head assembly. All the other hardware that you see right here is going to be the hardware that we use to get the head assembly mounted on to the shank right here, the adjustment shank. This is solid steel. Again, it's going to have that powder-coated finish on it. We're going to have a 6-hole adjustment design. The distance between these holes center on center is going to be 1-1/4 inch. Shank length which is the overall length from the back to the front is going to measure 12 inches. Then from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the adjustments holes, that's going to measure 8 inches. It does come with your standard 5/8 inch pin and clip to get that secured in your hitch. You can use the system in either the rise or drop position. Again, its got those adjustment holes, that way you can get the correct level of height that you needed to be at for your particular application. It also comes with some detailed instructions and owner responsibility tips. That way, you can maintenance as you needed and you can safely and effectively know how to install your weight distribution system and sway control system. That's going to do it for today's look at part number C17422. This is the Curt Weight Distribution System with the Sway Control.

I purchased this to pull a small trailer with our 2014 Ford Explorer. I cannot express what an improvement this made in the handling characteristics. I would never not use one again. 623126

I had a fastway e2 trunnion 12k pound hitch and hated it. It was great if you didnt need much pressure on the bars and always hooked up while on flat even ground. Most times I had to use a 3 foot prybar to get the weight transfer bars off the trailer and a 3 foot cheater bar to get the bars on!!! This 15k pound hitch from curt is great!!!! The welds could be better (pretty picky I'm a fabricator by trade) but nothing beats this style hitch. It may take an extra step if you want the friction brake but it is worth it. I run 2 friction brakes as I have a 38ft travel trailer and is pretty much a giant sail. The trunnion hitch couldn't handle that camper in the wind and there wasnt a way to adjust the bars for a windy day. but this hitch with 2 brakes works great. Dont always need 2 brakes but I like the option for when its windy out and we have a 2 hour drive on the expressway!!! 610729

This is an outstanding weight distribution system. I am fully pleased with it. I use it for towing my 2016 Grand Design 327RLTS. The tongue weight is rated at 1150lbs. I am certain it's closer to 1450lbs, but for this system it's no problem at all. I have no complaints and for the price it was the best buy on the web. Thanks. 333623

Ridiculously fast shipping and a perfect price! Arrived in good condition. Installation instruction were simple to follow. The actual product information from CURT as to the specific dimension as an overall unit (i.e. mechanical drawing) would be helpful to determine if the product works correctly for your trailer. Enough was provided that I took a chance but we did have to raise my AC unit on the front of my trailer 2.5" and move one of it's support bars back in order to install the weight distribution system. Not at all any fault or any concern of Etrailer, but just wanted to share this note in case other have a propane rack or something else on their tongue. 230288

I received my knew curt distribution hitch the other day. The shipping time was fast, in fact faster than expected. I put the few parts together on the truck and was pleased with the quality. I bought a new trailer and my old system was a little under rated. The curt hitch should work fine. 192117

Review from a similar Curt Short-Arm in Weight Distribution

I had an L shaped weight distribution hitch before I bought this Curt model from E trailer. If you the coop ape the two the older one wS easier to operate. The Pins that lock the chain brackets in please are difficult to remove and adding wd40 does not help also this new one seems to be lower to the ground,, making me bend over and sometimes or even get to my knees to hook it up .My wife used to be able to help me with the older one the new one she is not able so I do both sides myself . Also the part that connects to the truck you need to hold it sideways then flip the the release up and maneuver it he top 2 tabs into place , lot more work than the L shaped one I had. It’s ok otherwise. 615701

Easier to use then another brand. Only problem was that somehow I bent one of torsion bar retaining clips. Was afraid I would ruin it trying to straighten it out but didn't. I use a colored zip tie to mark the proper chain link to eliminate guessing. 241555

  • Differences Between Curt Weight Distribution C17063 and C17422
  • The biggest differences between the Curt Weight Distribution systems part # C17422 and # C17063 is the tongue weight ratings and the bar design. The # C17422 is a trunnion bar system rated for tongue weights up to 1,500 lbs and the part # C17063 is a round bar setup rated for tongue weights up to 1,400 lbs. Trunnion bars preferred typically as they usually provide better ground clearance and higher capacities. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it...

  • Why Can't You Back Up with Curt Weight Distribution System Installed
  • You can back up a trailer with a weight distribution system installed on as long as you don't end up in too tight of a turn. This is especially true with the Curt Weight Distribution System part # C17422 as it has a friction sway control system as well. If you are backing up basically in a straight line you would be fine, but if you think you are going to get into a tight turn you would need to disconnect the spring bars and the friction sway control system. Trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. For a trailer weighing 4,400 pounds that would be 440 to 660 pounds. • Weight Distribution Hitch with Cargo Trailer That Weighs 10,000 lb When Fully Loaded
  • Weight distribution has to be set up for each specific tongue weight the trailer will see. Otherwise you are going to spend a lot of time setting things back up. • Since your F-150's Class V hitch has a weight carrying capacity of 5000-lbs and a weight distributing capacity of 9900-lbs, then you do indeed need a weight distribution (WD) system to tow your trailer with a maximum gross weight of 7640-lbs.
