With weight distribution systems like the Curt part # C17422 you can backup as long as you mainly are going straight back. If you find yourself in any jackknife situations you would need to disconnect the bars and the sway control unit. A good rule of thumb is that as long as you aren't ending up in a tighter turning situation that you could get yourself into going forward then you will be fine in reverse.
