Using Weight Distribution System on Trailer with Underslung Coupler
Updated 07/23/2018 | Published 07/21/2018 >
Question:
I have a bottom mount coupler on my 2017 Jayco jayflight. my tuff tow weight dist, hitch does not have enough chain to reach the saddles. If I adjust the hitch so the that ball is angled to the front of the truck away from the trailer I can get the first link of chain on. Is this the way to solve the problem? or do I add longer chain?

While we do not currently carry Tuff Tow weight distribution systems, from what I could find they do not appear that they are designed for use on trailers with an underslung coupler like what you have. Using longer chains may help to reach the extra distance required to attach to the brackets while also keeping the ball level, but this may in turn create a ground clearance problem. Typically an underslung coupler requires a specific weight distribution head designed for it or a system that can be modified to work with this type of coupler. Otherwise you will likely end up with spring bars that hang too far below the trailer so that they swing back and forth and lead to problems with ground clearance during travel.
With this in mind, your best option will really be to use a system like the Blue Ox # BXW0553 that is specifically designed for underslung couplers. In order to determine if this or another system like it will work, you will want to determine the total tongue weight of your setup. This includes both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer along with any extra cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Ideally this number will fall somewhere near the middle of the operating range for the system you choose. This Blue Ox system features a tongue weight capacity of 350 to 550 pounds.
If you can tell me your total tongue weight, I will be happy to recommend a system that will work well with your trailer.
