The website is very easy to use. The video showing how to install the wiring assembly was very helpful for both showing me how to do it myself and for convincing me that it was the correct part. 1998 Ford Explorer

Great Fit 1998 ExplorerWas the exact plug I needed. Slid right in and worked perfectly. Used with magnetic holder and had plenty of wire to connect to my utility trailer.

by:

Installed perfectly with the adapter that is located on the drivers side rear taillight.

by:

Great product, took about 10 seconds to hook up, and works great. A lot easier than trying to splice the wires in with a universal plug.

  • Trailer Wiring on a 1997 Ford Explorer Stopped Working
If the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118345, was working on your 1997 Ford Explorer but then suddenly stopped working, the first thing I would check is the fuse that came with the converter. The power wire should be connected to the vehicle battery via the fuse and fuse holder. If you find that fuse is blown you will need to replace it. However, if there was a short on the trailer wiring, trailer side, or corrosion in the connectors on either side, it could blow the fuse again. Loss...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Needed for a 1997 Ford Explorer with Factory Tow Wiring Harness
If you Ford Explorer has the factory tow package installed, then the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring for the Ford Explorer, 1997, item # 118241, will work on your vehicle. We carry this item for you to purchase. To determine if the factory tow package is active on your vehicle you should use a circuit tester and test the connection you have found to make sure that the left turn/stop, right turn/stop and tail light functions are working. If any of these functions are not active you...

  • Trailer Wiring Harnesses for a 1997 Ford Explorer
Your 1997 Ford Explorer has a 3 wire system and requires a powered converter. The converter from the auto parts store has taillight, turn, and brake functions and a 5th wire for ground. A converter for your vehicle requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery to protect your vehicles sensitive wiring. Bypassing the modulite is not recommended for this reason. If the modulite is damaged, there are no internal serviceable parts so a replacement is the best option. If your Explorer...

  • 4-Way Trailer Wiring Harness For 1994 Ford Explorer
I called my contact at the manufacturer and the connector you sent the photo of sure looks like the mate for the Tow Package Wiring Harness, part # 118241. Since the # 118241 was designed to fit Explorers from 1995 and up, they may possibly have used the connector earlier. You can do some testing of the wires to see if this will work. You will need a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. Test the pins I have noted on the attached photo. Have someone sit in the front and run through the functions...

  • Installation of a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1997 Ford Explorer Without Factory Tow Package
First, you need to find out If your Ford Explorer is equipped with a tow-package port (90 percent are). If so use, item # 118241, which is much simpler to hook up. The plug is usually located in the rear of the vehicle on the driver side. However, the plug can also be found on the passenger side and sometimes even on both sides. The small grey plug is usually covered with a red nipple, but the colors and styles of caps do vary. If your Explorer is not equipped with the factory tow package...

  • Where is Factory Plug Located to Install Trailer Wiring Harness on a 1997 Ford Explorer
Usually, a Ford dealer can tell you if your 1997 Ford Explorer is equipped with the factory tow package by running the VIN in their system. There are also VIN decoders you can find online that may help. The factory connector, if present, to plug in harness # 118241 is located on the passenger's side of your Explorer behind the bumper. I have linked a video showing installation on a Ranger. On the Ranger the connector is on the driver's side but it will show you what you are looking for...

It sounds as if the connection you found is one that is located on the opposite side of the vehicle. If your 1998 model Explorer has the factory tow package installed the correct connector for the trailer wiring harness, # 118421, is sometimes on the drivers side or the passengers side. There is a very similar connector that the harness will not plug into on the opposite side in most every case. Go to the other side and locate the connector there and I am confident your wiring harness...

For wiring I also suggest the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector # 118345 if you do not have a tow package. • Installing Wiring Harness on 1999 Ford Explorer with Factory Tow Harness
If your 1999 Ford Explorer came equipped with a factory wiring harness, then the part you referenced, Tow Ready # 118241 is a correct fit. The round plug on this plug-and-play 4-pole harness connects to a matching round plug on the vehicle. While there could be multiple plugs on the vehicle only one will carry the lighting signals for a trailer. If the plug you found is round, and looks like the photo I've provided, remove the protective cap and use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 as you activate each lighting function to see if the plug is active. If the socket is active, you could use part # 118241. If the plug isn't active, since your Explorer isn't the sport model you will need to use a powered taillight converter, part # 118345. • Troubleshooting Factory Trailer Wiring on 1998 Ford Ranger with Left Side Functions Inactive
You can try replacing the factory 4-pole harness on your 1998 Ranger with part # 118241 from Tow Ready. This has a round connector on one end to plug in to the OEM wiring under the vehicle on the driver's side. If the problem is downstream of that point, then this should fix you up. I have linked a video showing an installation of harness # 118241 on a 1996 Explorer and the installation will be very similar on your 1995 model. • Not Getting Running Lights to the Trailer Connector on a 2001 Explorer Sport
Though we will not have factory wiring diagrams, I am pretty sure I know what is going on and this should be a quick and easy fix. In the passenger compartment fuse box of your 2001 Ford Explorer, there should be a 15A in position 30. This port will handle the park lamp / trailer tow relay and should be all you need to get everything up and running properly. However, in the off chance this does not get you power to the running lamps, let me know and we can try a few other things.
