I would like to install a trailer brake controller on my 2000 ford explorer and would like to know if there are any that will plug in or if there is an adapter available to plug in a brake controller.

There was not a tow package available on a 2000 Ford Explorer that included a plug-in port for a brake controller. To install a brake controller on a 2000 Explorer, you will need to hardwire the kit. You would need a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy, part # 90885. You will need part # ETBC7 to provide a 7-Way connector at the bumper. This kit also includes the wire and supplies needed to install the brake controller and 7-Way. If you do not have a 4-Way already installed, you will also need part # 118345 or if you have the tow package, you can use part # 118241.

The project may seem like a lot because of all the parts involved, but it is not bad when you break it down step by step. I have included a link to a video of a brake controller install on a 1996 Ford Explorer. It uses the same ETBC7 kit, but the brake controller is a bit different. Not to worry though, it installs the same way.
