Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your truck level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your truck sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your truck and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your truck by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your truck's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

RED Label spring construction

Unlike standard Ride-Rite air springs, the RED Label air springs operate up to 150 psi to maximize its weight capacity. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each RED Label kit includes vehicle-specific brackets, fasteners, and hardware for fast, no-drill installation. The hardware installs directly on your axle and frame and the air springs install onto the mounting points provided by the brackets. Additional equipment like control panels, compressors, and air tanks are sold separately.

Video Transcript for Firestone Ride-Rite Rear Air Helper Springs Review

Hello neighbors it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at the Firestone Ride-Rite Red Label Extreme Duty Rear Air Helper Springs. Now, these are gonna be for your 3/4 ton and up vehicles, and you're gonna want to use our fit guide on etrailer.com to make sure that you're getting the proper kit for your vehicle. Now, the heavy duty aspect of these bags is actually really nice, because it adds a lot more pressure that you can add to the bags, opening up that window to what you can adjust and also what it can handle. So, it actually has a 7,500 pound load capacity. So, that's not gonna instantly give you that to your vehicle but it is gonna supplement what your factory suspension is doing, to really give you a fighting chance and give you the best towing capabilities possible. It's going to level this out and it's gonna reduce body roll while doing that, but also it's gonna have a much bigger aspect on the front suspension, and that's where you're gonna notice you're gonna have more traction, more steering feel, better breaking and overall just less wear on your suspension.

Another thing too, is gonna be your headlight height is actually gonna be able to be adjusted back to the normal height. That way your beams aren't blinding people driving by and you have a nice spotlight on where you're driving. Now as far as your headlight height goes, you can imagine the factory truck, here's your cutoff beam, but as you put weight on the back that front end is gonna pitch up, and so is beam of your headlights. So, those oncoming traffic, they're gonna see those lights right in their line of sight, and you're also gonna kinda lose that light on the road where you should be being able to see while you're driving. So, having those bags to kinda counteract that back end up a little bit is gonna bring those headlight heights back to about the factory level.

The bags themself are rubber construction and they have a double convoluted design. That just means that it has a braided wire that kinda creates the shape of the actual bag itself. It's gonna give it rigidity, but it also increases the burst pressure of the spring. Now, this does have four layers of reinforced rubber, so overall, the strength and durability of the bags themself, is very strong. Going along with that, the metal caps that are actually attaching the bags to the vehicle are corrosion resistant and the rolled crimp seal also helps keep the bag actually anchored in place, so it's not slopping around.

Now, the bags being the heavy duty ones, have a range of five to 150 PSI of what you can actually put in there. Now, the five is just to kind of hold its shape in that way they don't kind of mush down with nothing in there, but 150 PSI is quite a bit higher than your typical bag. And that's gonna be nice to adjust for whatever load you may have. So, if it's kind of a big load you can raise it up midway, or if you really need all you can get, that 150 PSI is really gonna give you a firm feel. Something else I'll notice here is you actually can fill each bag individually.

So, if you need to center up a load, say you have something offset in your bed or on your trailer, you can actually do that by manually adjusting the bags to your preference. Now, the straighter valves on the back actually have this nice bracket, so, they're always gonna be here when you need to fill up. So, you can stop at the gas station, fill these up or use your compressor at home to fill them. Now, if you do wanna upgrade in the future, you can actually put a compressor on the vehicle, that way you can change the pressure on the fly, you don't have to worry about stopping to pull in to actually fill these up. Now, the one that I recommend is gonna be the Firestone Air Command. And what's really cool about that is there's no need to install gauges or any manual controls inside of the vehicle. You can actually control it from an app on your phone, so, you'll always have it whenever you need it and be able to control it with a touch of your screen. Now, we've gone over some of the benefits and kind of what the bags do, and you may be wondering, well, how hard is the install And I'm here to tell you, there's no drilling involved. All of the hardware is included and it's a pretty easy install to do. You could probably do this in your driveway. Now, all the hardware included as well as the instruction manual, they're all high quality, and in fact, the bags are actually made in the USA. So, the quality you can definitely tell just by handling the product. So, now that we've kinda gone over some of that let's actually take it out on a test course and show you what it can do. And we're gonna hit some bumps and that's gonna kinda simulate rocky roads or just uneven surfaces, but really it's gonna stress that suspension a little bit so, we can actually see kind of how it's working and how it's not. And really once you have that load down you're lowering the window of what your suspension can do. And when you hit those bumps a lot of times it'll bottom out pretty early. So, let's hit these. And just from previous airbag installations a lot of times what you'll notice is with that weight in back, the vehicle just kind of loses its sense of poise. It feels like it's really struggling in the rear. This one is pretty decent actually. The 250 is a pretty good Chassis here, and it does seem like it's holding up pretty well, but I'm gonna kind of just drive around and see how the steering and breaking is, and that should be improved pretty quickly with those airbags. So, right out the gate, the first turn that I make, the front end does feel very loose. The steering feel is, it's very easy to turn the steering wheel, which seems like it's a good thing, but when you're driving, it really does make you feel less planted and a little less sure footed while driving, which when you have weight loaded up, it's already generally, kind of a nerve wrecking experience at times. So, to get full feel of the vehicle and full breaking is gonna make a big difference. And speaking of breaking, I'm gonna kind of get some speed going here, and hit the brakes. They do feel pretty spongy out the gate there and also you can kind of feel that weight transfer and it kind of shocks the vehicle a little bit. I'm also gonna be doing a quick slalom here, just kind of going back and forth to simulate evasive maneuvering. And I'm having to work pretty quick to get the steering wheel moving. It is very light. It just feels kind of numb in the steering. It just doesn't really have that grip feel up front that I'm looking for. Overall though, the rear suspension, it seems okay. It does feel quite a bit stiffer than stock. Nothing horrible here. Again, a lot of that has to come down to the Chassis. Some of the smaller half ton pickups are. It's really be noticeable with this same weight loaded up, but regardless, having the bags on here generally, I've only seen a really drastic improvement and it's gonna make just a nice, more confident feel. The truck will actually feel like it's got that suspension to hold that weight and it's gonna cause it to honestly, just prevent premature wear on a lot of your components which is huge in itself. So, after taking on the test course, we kind of got a feel for how it's actually acting with that weight. So, now let's take it to the shop, we'll get the airbags installed and we'll come back out later and see the difference that it's actually made. So, now let's take it back on the test course and see how it actually alters the way the vehicle drives. So, we're gonna hit these bumps first, and already the rear just seems a lot more poised and able to handle that weight, without it feeling like it's really overworking that rear suspension. It just kind of is a little more firm, but in a good way. It does feel like it's a little more heavy duty and that's the glory of these is, if you need to, you can bump up more pressure, you can take some out. You can kind of custom tailor the way that you wanna drive and the feel that you're looking for. And immediately that turn also feels more planted. The steering wheel has a little bit more huff to it which a lot of times in vehicles that's kind of the sign of, you know, you feel sure footed at least in your handling, and it definitely has come back, whereas before it kind of just felt like you we're steering it and not exactly getting that input directly. So, let's go ahead and we're gonna do a little bit of slalom here just for some evasive maneuvering and see how that caters it. Oh! It's already better. Just that first kind of counter steer back, before it was extremely numb and it felt like the truck was kind of just hanging behind a few seconds before it could catch up and already this just, I. If you wouldn't tell me that there's weight in the back, I don't know if I would know, honestly. And that was a look at the Firestone Ride-Rite Red label Extreme Duty Rear Air Helper Springs..

Installed on a 2015 F350 Super Duty with Reese universal bed rail kit previously mounted. Straight forward install with includeded instructions. No additional drill or modification except neeeding to reroute 1 wiring harness to maintain proper clearance around left bag. The left upper bracket shims didn't directly line up. There is a slight overhang of the bracket along the frame rail due to this, but enough surface area covered. Left side used (1) 1/2" and (1) 1/4" shims. Right side bracket used (2) 1/2" shims. Torque specs are labeled on top of air bag.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite Red Label in Vehicle Suspension

The Ride-Rite Extreme Duty Air Springs (RED Label) worked great on my RAM 3500 DRW. I pull a 40' Montana 5th wheel. 15,000 lbs and about 4,000lbs on the truck bed. I had the NON Red Label rated at 5,000 lbs and blew one airbag on extremely bumpy Illinois Interstate. I have put about 20,000 miles on the RED label airbags rated to 7,500lbs and have been VERY happy.
P.S. I am not one of those Saggy rear end trucks that shine their headlights in your eyes thanks to the support I get from these air bags. Level ride = level lights

Still going strong!!!

Review from a similar Ride-Rite Red Label in Vehicle Suspension

As a reference point to others, I have a Dodge Ram 3500 without duel rear tires. My biggest loads are my Artic Fox slide-in camper or my 12k utility trailer. I had a set of helper steel springs to help handle the load, but the ride was rough. I dumped the steel helper springs and installed the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Springs. That has allowed me to vary the air pressure with the load in the truck for an improved ride, especially when empty. The structural parts of the kit are very good and well designed and installed quite easily. The air fitting sucked. I never got the ones that go into the top of the air springs installed. I went down to the local auto parts store and got some that fit. I should admit that it was subzero in my unheated garage when I installed them so that added to difficulty of handling small parts in tight spaces. Performance wise they have met my expectations and improved the ride of the truck when loaded or empty.

Outstanding kit. Install was fairly easy. Passenger side frame bracket was had to be bent open a hair to fit over the vehicle frame. Installed with the Air Lift 73000EZ compressor on a 2019 Ram 2500 4x4. Towing a 5th-wheeel with 2300lbs pin weight (11,000lbs trailer). The complete system works beautifully. Can adjust the ride height of the truck to properly level the trailer. Stable tow during high cross winds. Have over 10,000 miles towing in the past year. Very happy with this system.

Bags work as advertised. I also ordered the T fitting. System leaked from day one. I was told it would until May: June of 22 to receive new Firestone T fitting. No mention that a Ride Right T would work( it was 1/2 price) Finally ordered a Ride Right T, received it 3-5 business days. System now holds air. Sent old Firestone T back for refund, no credit on card on file, been 60 days or more. etrailer staff dropped the ball on this one. Product is good, etrailer service was poor on this order

Comments
I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. I see that the T fitting part # AL21838
Air Lift Union Tee for 1/4" Air Lines
$8.45
was the fitting that you ordered. I am glad that it is working for you. We typically would not recommend it only because it was made by a different manufacturer and the part would not have been tested with the Firestone system.

It is disappointing to receive the kit and not be able to install it. Customer Service will be in touch to have the missing components shipped out.

Gave sit 4 stars only for the fact: yes it will work with 7k axels. However you will need longer U bolts which etrailer does not offer for the 3” or 7k axels. Had to get longer and upgraded U-Bolts from etrailer. I ordered these from Rough Country.

They were longer than needed cut about 1.25” off.

i went with the Firestone setup in lieu of a bumpstop type of helper or one of the other air filled type of lift/ leveling brands, based on reviews from 5th wheel travel trailer fourms as well as the Ford Tremor owners fourm. i had also used a similar Firestone air lift upgrade on a Ford Bronco back some years ago and had great results. the Ride Rite system allows me to adjust according to the amount of weight which is important to me while hauling our 5th wheel trailer. i installed the system my self. i am including a couple photos taken a year after the installation. one pic shows where i installed the air valves. I would highly recommend this system, thus the 5 stars.

Installation guide and videos provided a completed DIY installation. One thing I would recommend is when attaching the top brackets is ensure you have the curved braces positioned towards the outside of the truck allowing room to screw the 1 1/8 nut on to the air valve.

Easy install with wheels on carriage bolts should be 3.5 inches not 3 inch
at least for my 2016 f350 dually I also had to make adjustments as I have gooseneck fifth wheel hookup .

Easy to install. Did exactly what I needed. I tow a 35 ft toy hauler TT. Very tongue heavy especially with no toy. These bags made it easy to keep my F350 level for a much better drive.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite Red Label in Vehicle Suspension

It's a very nice kit! But there's a couple of things people should know about, like little tips and tricks about installing it on a new 2021 F250. First, the Firestone kit; frame nuts didn't have the holes for the threaded rods. That in itself is a problem. Tips for that: once the clips and jounce bumper are out, take your screwdriver and scrape the edges inside the frame. Place the frame nuts carefully into position grab your flat head screws put them in easy. Grab some super glue, get the edges, pull them back down into place, and let them dry! Then you'll be ready to mount the top bracket. Second, once you figure out what your height is for the axle saddle bracket holes to use. Put into the Lower bracket, put the four bolts and nuts on. Move over to the driver side [ driver side is the left side ] remove the brake line bolt 10mm let it hang free. Place the brackets you just put together and set them down on the axle. You might be tight to your steel brake line like I was. I had to cut/grind at an angle about 3/16 on the Lower bracket on one corner only, put both brackets together by hand again, and replace it on the axle. If you're good, then go ahead tighten them up now, don't wait. I'll show a photo of what mine looks like. No need to worry about the right side [ passenger side ]. Set those brackets up and tighten them up now, so there's no concern on that side of cutting or grinding. Back to the driver side, there's a little wire for the brake sensor; go ahead and use a zip tie and zip it to the brake line now. Why because? It lays right where the foot of the axle saddle bracket sits. You don't want to crush it; it's for your ABS. Third, place the bag onto two brackets you just set up and ready to install; use the bolt hand tighten only. Work the driver side first; it the hards in terms of the two sides. Jack the vehicle up by your receiver a few inches to lift the bed a little that way, you can sit up under your truck, where your truck spare tire was. Grab your bail clamp and tighten the bracket and bag into place, then connect the top of the bag by hand with the 15/16 nut, plus moving the button of the bag to position it into the best place; once you're happy, then tighten the button bolt 9/16. Then use your tool to tighten the top 15/16 nut. Finish off with your two carriage bolts and under the axle bracket.

Just got the air lift installed this morning. Hooked up 40ft trailer and drove to shop to get annual inspection. Trailer was empty so no real noticeable difference yet.
The install was straightforward with no drilling needed. Will see how well it works next week when I begin pulling loads again. Just as I have come to expect with etrailer the purchase was as good as listed on site. Air bags are heavy rubber and should hold up to the loads that I put on the truck.

My sales rep Adam was very helpful and getting the information I needed to help me solve my problem my truck was seesawing back-and-forth from side to side with the slide in camper on it due to having coil springs the airbags completely stabilized my truck and made it drivable it sure beat the heck out of spending $10,000 to upgrade to a heavier truck ( the newer ram three-quarter ton trucks have coil springs in back instead of the traditional leave springs) and much to my surprise the order arrived three days earlier than anticipated. I will be doing my future shopping with etrailer.com and Adam

Overall I like the air bags. Fitment was ok,to my surprise the leftside was more of a challenge than the right-side, but nothing too drastic. I used the provided plastic bracket for the fill valves that zip tie to the receiver hitch and I will be getting rid of that!! No matter how tight you make the zip ties,, it just slides away from you when you go to fill the bags. The bags do make a difference while hauling my camper as its heavy on the right-side, and the bags do a great job of leveling the truck back out side to side. I can also feel the difference Overall while traveling down Americas lovely bumpy roads.. the truck feels smoother and in more control. The truck is a 21 gmc dually and can handle the weight just fine, however with the camper being heavier on the right side. The bags really make it better, we also do alot of off roading and anticipate a more controlled ride there also.

Works great. Fit my F250 perfectly and did not interfere with the 5th wheel puck system(etrailer). I’m not a mechanic but was able to do it myself by jacking up the rear so the axle was hanging freely.
Adding the compressor may have added a better experience considering you can add or subtract air from the system without stopping. I’ll be adding that system before hitting the road again.

Comments
Works great. Thought of installing an onboard compressor but decided it wasn’t necessary because the system doesn’t loose air. I think it was a good investment.
