Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

I ordered the wrong parts. I needed a replacement bellow. I blew a tire and the interior tire destroyed the bellow for my Firestone Ride-Rite air helper spring. I am not sure if Firestone don't provide enough information or if etrailer.com failed to provide enough information for replacement bellows. I had to re-order from a different supplier. The other supplier had the exact information to get the correct replacement bellows. This research was expensive and time consuming, but I finally got the correct part. 162040

My shipment arrived ahead of schedule and as advertised. It was package very well and I am impressed with the quality and fit of the air springs I purchased. I am very pleased with etrailer.com and I highly recomend the firestone product and etrailer.com the vendor who sold them to me. I look forward to further dealings with them. 331198

My Firestone Air Springs as well as being a relatively easy install, are still doing their job perfectly. I installed them on a 2014 F350 that is loaded down with a steel bed, tool boxes and is fitted with an 1,100 lb. welding machine with 400 ft. of welding leads. I find that the air bags have held up well and I would not hesitate to recommend them along with etrailer.com

Installation was not hard at all, I definitely recommend having an impact wrench handy though. The airbags definitely improved how my toy hauler towed!! They took out all sag and reduced the roughness on torn up highways. The pic shows my truck back to factory ride height with the bags. 665369

I have traded this truck since then, however they improved my ride and stance every time I pulled my trailer.

Review from a similar Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Opened the box and in awe, I called my service guy, but he couldn't get to it for a week, so I started in. Rolled my truck up on some blocks. Removing the stock rubber bumper was easy. Then the installation. Bolting the upper housing onto the frame was the first job and was easy, except I forgot to include the spacer. So two steps later I had to unbolt it , insert the spacer and re tighten it. The rest of it went well and is now ready for the air line. Quit for the day and this morning will install the other side, which should go much easier now that I have learned from the first side. So it looks hopeful that even I can accomplish this. As a 75 year old retired surgeon that is saying a lot! Stay tuned for next installment which should review performance. 483120

I don't typically do reviews but I was so excited about these I just had to share. installation was fine, it took me about 2 hours. Watch the installation videos, it helps. I thought I needed a 3/4 ton truck just to put some heavy loads in my bed a few times a year, but not anymore! See the picture I loaded. that is my Silverado 1500 with approximately 1,500lbs in the back (there are a bunch of concrete curbs in the back). Can you tell, I can't. That's with only 30lbs of air in the springs. I have used air shocks in the past but forget that, no comparison. I will say I did not get the series to fill itself which I will probably upgrade to soon, but for now, these are exceeding my expectations. 603952

Very good fitment, so you do get what you pay the premium for. My only concern is some sort of regulator would go a long way to getting the pressure equalized between the bags. This is not something I expected, but will probably add later to enhance the ease of use and warranted that fifth star. Highly recommend as advertised regardless! 635267

The air bags are the second purchase for this product for two different Toyota trucks in three years. I chose etrailer because they are thorough, always right and provide excellent customer service. The bags worked well with my bumper pull last year at around 20 psig and now with our new fifth wheel at 55 psig. Both sets of Firestone bags have been excellent. The Toyota Tundra pulls our Grand Design very well. We drove from South Carolina to New Mexico with no problems and a smooth ride thanks to etrailer and Firestone! 409027

Since your 2019 Chevy Silverado 3500 is a cab and chassis the correct Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs Kit is part # F2176. I reached out to my contact at Firestone who said that the # F2176 kit will fit your cab and chassis only if you have 8" of clearance between the frame rail of your pickup and the sidewall of your tire. This is because the air bag mounts on top of the leaf spring and needs that clearance to fit. This is the only kit that will (potentially with the clearance)...

It also will also include drilling two holes on the driver's side for relocating a line according to the attached instructions. Since both the Firestone Ride-Rite # F2176 and the Air Lift LoadLifter # AL57345 have brackets that install on the inside of the frame opposite of where 5th wheel base rail brackets install they may not fit together. Air springs are a good solution if the load in the back is frequently changing side to side. When it remains static a better solution would be to go with a non-air system. The load in the back of an ambulance can change depending on the personnel inside, the equipment, and the patient. But there is also not as much room to move the variables around in the back. Either type of system would work for you. For your ambulances, and for an air system, I recommend the Firestone system, # F2550....
