Benefits of a Heated Engine

Start your engine easier and warm your cab faster in cold weather with this lower radiator hose heater. Heating your engine coolant keeps it from thickening and freezing, resulting in more reliable start-ups and smoother operation altogether. It also lessens the workload and extends the life of your vehicle's battery. And because starting your engine when it's warm creates less condensation in the engine block than starting it when it's cold, your engine will get better initial fuel vaporization, which causes fewer emissions and less pollution.

Lower Radiator Hose Heater

This heater splices into your lower radiator hose to heat your coolant. The heated coolant pushes the cold coolant through the radiator and thermosiphons it back to the heater. The heater's internal thermostat automatically shuts the heater off at 270 degrees Fahrenheit to keep the coolant at an optimal temperature, which allows the heater to operate safely overnight to ensure that no hoses freeze while your vehicle sits. Once you turn the ignition in the morning, your vehicle's water pump will cycle the heated coolant through the engine block and heater core. This will allow for a smooth startup, and it will also help your cab to heat and defrost faster.

Video Transcript for Kat's Heaters Lower Radiator Hose Heater w/ 270 F Thermostat: The Breakdown

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. And today we're gonna take a look at this Kat's Heaters lower radiator hose heater. Now, this lower radiator hose heater is going to preheat your radiator in cold temperatures by heating your coolant and circulating warm coolant. It's going to keep your hoses from freezing and assist with smoother start ups while allowing your cab to heat up and defrost faster. Now, this is going to be an easy installation with the included hose clamps that you see there.

This heater is going to splice into your one-inch diameter lower radiator hose to heat your coolant. The heated coolant is then going to push the cold coolant through the radiator and thermosiphons it back to the heater. The heater's internal thermostat automatically shuts the heater off at 270 degrees Fahrenheit to keep the coolant at an optimal temperature. So, that's going to allow this heater to operate safely overnight to ensure that no hoses freezes while your vehicle sits. Now, once you turn the ignition on in the morning, your vehicle's water pump will cycle the heated coolant through the engine block and the heater core.

Now, the heating element itself is enclosed in the casing to prevent burnout. You do not wanna use this heater with 100% antifreeze solution. You also do not wanna start your engine with the heater plugged in. Then you're just going to simply route this three-prong plug through your grill and plug it into your standard 120 volt AC outlet or extension cord. This cord can be replaced to avoid buying a new heater if it gets damaged.

So, just to let you know, we do carry the cord separately if you are ever in need of it. And on your screen, I am including the item number for just the cord itself. And you can just pop that item number that you see there on your screen in the search field of our website. It'll take you to that cord. But the cord does come with this heater.

This is made here in the USA. And it's made of a die-cast aluminum construction so it's going to be impact and corrosion resistant. It will maintain strength in high heat. It's molded into one piece to prevent any leaks. This is CSA certified. And this has a wattage of 400 watts. And this also includes installation instructions to walk you through the simple installation procedure. Well, that's gonna conclude our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me..

I ordered this for my John Deere lawn tractor. I use it in the winter to blow snow but have to keep it in an UNHEATED shed. The heater works awesome and is compact enough to mount behind the side panel with absolutely no interference with anything. I Highly recommend this heater and etrailer.com to buy it from, they are great to work with and the item came quickly.

by:

It is a great product. I only gave it 4 stars because it won't fit in the location I need to put it. So I put it on my wife's car instead of my tractor. IT works great.

by:

Appears to be a quality product. I have not used it yet.

by:

This was a replacement as my previous one was damaged. In general, a great warmer for my 2003 VW TDI. I typically only use it when it's below 20F. It's nice coming to a car that is warm from the get go.

I got this heater about a year ago but only installed it about a month ago. I have it in a
John Deere tractor with a 21 HP diesel engine. Here in Canada our temperature is measured in celsius and at minus 25 C which is about minus 12 F this little heater melted the snow and ice off the engine cover. I would recommend this heater to anyone. it is an excellent device.

by:

It’s working Ok but I think the block heater would have been better, as it heats a little but I guess with the car outside and being so cold out it really can’t get that warm being in the lower radiator hose instead of the engine block itself. But at the time I installed it was middle of winter and did’nt have the time or weather to install one in the block instead as it would have been a project to do it that way .Maybe in the warmer weather I will switch to the block heater instead.

by:

Installed on mahindra 2516 hst. Heater worked great in single digit weather.

by:

Best way to get fast starts on those frosty winter mornings.

by:

Installed on a Mitsubishi 6 Cylinder diesel marine engine and worked like a charm. Some mornings experienced -25 degree Celsius temperature and engine would start first try, highly recommend.

by:

My in-line lower radiator water heater arrived earlier than expected. It was packaged well and protected to ensure that it wouldn't be damaged. I was very pleased with the speed and accuracy of my order.

by:

Does what it is supposed to do-keeps the radiator fluid temp above freezing.

by:

After reading the instructions it was a very easy install. Took about 1hr to install let it run for 40 minutes to check for any leaks and get the air out. This is a DIY project.

by:

Received the heater today. Looks good. Will install in the next couple of days. It will go on my small ford tractor to replace the bad one on it now. Thanks for the good service

  • Circulating Heater Compatibility with Honda CR-V
The Kat's Heaters Lower Radiator Hose Heater w/ 270 F Thermostat - 1" Hose - 400W # KH16400 is a universal fit, so it may require slight adaptation for each fit. From what I can find online, it appears the CR-V models use a hose that is 1-3/16 inches diameter so the included hose clamps should work very well with this application.

  • Will Kat's Lower Radiator Hose Heater Work Well Enough for -40 Degree Temperatures
There are a couple of things to consider. First is the 1997 Honda Civic going to be stored outside or in a garage? Second does the vehicle use a 100 percent anti-freeze solution or a 50/50 mix? The heater # KH16400 cannot be used with a 100 percent solution. If outside the wind could cool down the system as quick as the heater could warm it. The heater is rated at 400 watts. If the vehicle is kept in a garage and is not using a 100 percent anti-freeze solution the heater will be able to...
