Cold mornings don't have to mean sluggish starts and long idles. This custom fit block heater warms the coolant so your engine fires up smooth and reaches operating temperature quicker. Hit the road faster knowing your engine is ready to work.
Your car might have a few years behind it, but it still needs to get you where you're going, even when temperatures drop below freezing. This 400-watt Zerostart heater warms the coolant inside your engine block before you turn the key. Starting with warmer coolant reduces cold-start strain and lets the engine reach operating temperature sooner. It's a practical way to prepare for winter mornings when your vehicle has spent the night outside.
This heater screws into a designated 3/4" NPT threaded opening in your engine block. Although it's listed as frost-plug style, it doesn't press into a smooth core-plug hole or slide into a dry cartridge cavity. The threaded connection needs to match the specified opening for your engine. Check the vehicle fit information to confirm compatibility, then use the 2026 Zerostart catalog linked below (instruction link B) to find the correct installation location. The manufacturer's installation instructions explain the procedure in detail.
Installation involves draining the coolant and removing the designated threaded plug. Apply pipe-thread sealant or PTFE tape to the heater threads as directed, then install and tighten the heater securely. After refilling the cooling system, run the engine to check for leaks and remove trapped air before plugging in the heater. The heating element must be completely submerged in coolant whenever power is connected.
The included 5' silicone cord can be routed toward the front grille, giving you an accessible place to plug in before a cold-weather departure. Secure it away from hot engine parts, sharp edges, and anything that moves. Phillips & Temro recommends plugging in the heater at least 3 to 4 hours before departure to give the coolant time to warm up. Also, remember to unplug it before starting the engine.
The cord is removable, so you won't need to replace the entire heater if it becomes damaged. This particular heater uses a straight cord connector with a rectangular terminal. If you need a new one, the Zerostart replacement power cord (ZE77SR) is available separately. Be sure to use this connector style rather than the right-angle cords used on some other Zerostart heaters.
Zerostart is a Phillips & Temro brand. You might recognize Phillips & Temro from original-equipment engine-heating applications even if Zerostart is a new name to you. The company develops heaters for both factory and aftermarket applications, including engines that use threaded immersion heaters like this one. That experience is worth knowing about when you're choosing a heater that needs to fit the right opening in your engine block.
Use a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water. Never use straight antifreeze or a mixture containing more than 65% antifreeze, as this can cause the heating element to fail prematurely. Avoid stop-leak additives. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for sealing and tightening the threaded heater. Use the specified pipe-thread sealant or PTFE tape and avoid overtightening, which can damage the threads or compromise the seal.
Never plug in the heater before installation just to see if it works. Without coolant surrounding the heating element, it can quickly overheat and cause serious burns. Instead, disconnect the heater from power and use a multimeter to check resistance directly across its electrical pins. The manufacturer's general testing guidance specifies a reading between 5 and 100 ohms.
Always make sure the heating element is fully submerged in coolant and any trapped air has been removed before plugging it in. Unplug the heater before starting your engine. Running the engine while the heater is plugged in can create an air pocket around the element, causing it to overheat and fail prematurely.
When disconnecting the heater from your extension cord, firmly grasp each plug and pull them apart. Never yank on the cords themselves. This can damage the electrical connections, potentially causing the heater to malfunction or creating an electrical short.
