This is a well made hitch, much like all of the Curt products I have used over the years. It works great for hauling our bike carrier. The design of this hitch makes it hang L-O-W. So low that it scrapes on dips in the road and when coming out of the driveway. -1 star for the design.

You mentioned and sent in pictures to show that the hitch hangs low which is causing it to scrape on the dips in the road. I checked and due to the way, the vehicle is setup, all of the trailer hitches they make for it will hang down rather low. There is one option I have for you to prevent it from scraping the pavement. It would be to use a skid wheel like the Roadmaster Rollaway Trailer Hitch Protector part # RM-050. The skid wheel attaches to the hitch via the hitch pin hole and will prevent the receiver tube opening from scraping the pavement on inclines.

The hitch receiver was poorly packaged for a multiple states travel...my box was received with both ends hanging out of the box.I understand UPS throws the packages around but the heavier packages need proper packing.etrailer has good products and good prices but needs better boxes. Thanks.

I think this will serve my purpose. I wish to pull a 4x8 utility trailer with 4-wheeler. My son hopes the bolts are strong enough as intended. I thought the hitch would be more hidden but it will be ok as is. Less expensive than the dealership price.
The wiring instructions have it going thru the back and out of the hatch door. Not a good idea so we installed wiring underneath.

I just purchased a 2014 Subaru outback. I need a 2 hitch to haul my bikes. I already have a Hollywood rack that holds 4 bikes and would like to drive the outback some of the time instead of my gas guzzling Toyota Tundra. Recommendations?

I called up a couple of our manufacturers, and there is no word yet on when hitches will be available for a 2014 Outback. As soon as they do become available, we will add them to our website and they will show up in the Fit Guide. If you are in need of a hitch right away, I would imagine the dealer would have them available but they may be more costly than an aftermarket unit.

Just exactly as the youtube installation video said it would go. My Dad and I noted that the written instructions, hardware kit, and youtube install directions were all in perfect alignment. Excellent quality product that actually went in exactly as it was described! (shocking to us). My Dad was so impressed he's thinking of buying a hitch kit for "Grandma's SUV". Great website, great product videos, great shipping/tracking, and great product! So easy we did it right in the driveway!

2017 Subaru Legacy

Hitch was delivered with missing paint and scratches.
I did not return because it was on the frame of the hitch. We repainted it.
Where was quality control on this?

by:

The box arrived pretty beat up, but other than some minor scratches, it was ok. The mounting area did not sit flat with the subframe, so O had to shim it with 2 large washers. It sit quite low on the back of the car, but I guess that's to be expected, not being a factory design. The [online] video from etrailer was excellent in showing how to do it. The paper instructions are useless other then giving you how much to torque the bolts. The fit is good. Trimming the exhaust shield was a pain and had to do it several times until it cleared the hitch. Remember to paint the bare metal on all 4 holes you will drill for this car so it doesn't rust. You will need a second person to put the hitch in place. Putting the exhaust back on the hangers is very hard. Remove the rubber hangers completely and lube the hanger bars with silicone or Windex to make it easier to go back on. Don't use oil.

It is possible that the hitch arrived flexed which could the brackets to not lie flat against the frame. We do have an FAQ that can help with correcting flexed hitches. I am also including a link on hitch installation tips for lowering the exhaust.

This Curt trailer hitch fits our 2013 Subaru Outback perfectly. I've installed many hitches and there were no surprises installing this one.
.
The black finish is flawless. You can readily see the hitch when you look at the car but that's OK as it looks very robust. I peeled the stickers of the hitch (like I always do) and it looks like it came with the car from the factory.
.
Oh yea, it works too. I only buy cars that can be equipped with a 2" hitch... for trailers, bike racks or roof rack load extenders. This hitch helps the Outback be a big boy toy.

The Curt trailer hitch along with the Yakama load extender also from eTrailer turns my Subie into a truck that can haul 4x8 sheet material and lumber up to 20 feet. No need to borrow or rent trucks for these kinds of home improvement runs.

Seems to be what I expected. I recommend having a friend help you position the receiver in place. The instructions illustrations were fairly poor; the image made it difficult to determine which factory hole to use. I was roasting in the driveway and rushed which led me to using the wrong factory hole and some re work ( removing those square nuts isnt easily performed). Double check the alignment of the receiver before drilling your holes.

I purchased this hitch for our Suburu Outback to be able to tow a small camper. After making the purchase it arrived within a few days, and my son and I had installed by the end of that week. What made this easier was the video to show exactly how to install it and the wiring harness that I got with it. The only problem we had with the installation was drilling through the subframe of the car, I'm thinking sharper drill bits next time. We spent 4 days towing the camper around for a short state park vacation and I have since used it for towing u-haul trailers without any issues. A great product, and thanks to etrailer for providing such informative videos.

by:
2012 SubaruOutback Wagon

Perfect. Instructions and online video helped immensely. Super easy and only slow part for me was drilling new holes, probably a better drill bit would help but with patience I got it. This site could score some extra revenue by selling the size drill bit you need. It's a hefty item, you will need two people to hang it, as the video mentions. Can't wait to get my trailer and get rolling

Great! No wear or tear noticed even after a year of hauling

Received this hitch in perfect condition in a timely manner. Bit tricky to install but the enclosed innstructions are very clear. I was not too crazy about having to drill holes into the mainframe of a car only 3 weeks old though. Had to patch up the holes with a super quality 3m marine sealant designed for below waterline use. This was to provide a permanent moisture barrier to prevent rust from forming on the freshly cut metal edges. Had the inside rails resprayed with rustproofing compound. Overall, the entire install took me 51 minutes with basic hand tools. I was fortunate that my neighbour has a gargae and provided me with a hoist. Installing this hitch without having the car elevated would be nearly impossible. No pics, sorry. Hands way too dirty to handle a camera. Etrailer has always provided me with exceptional service. They also price matched as per their policy immediately.

This is the third Curt hitch I have purchased from etrailer.com. All have been very well made and relatively easy to install. With this one, however, I thought I might pass on a couple of recommendations. 1. The instructions which accompany the hitch show only three holes in in the frame rail. There are actually four. Using only the three shown in page 1 of the instructions actually places the hitch 4 inches forward (toward the front of the car) than it actually needs to be. Worse yet, these mounting holes (1/4" in diameter) are the exact distance apart for the hitch, so all one needs to do is enlarge them to 1/2 inch for the bolts, so it is easy to mistakenly mount the hitch in the wrong location. If one views the installation video first, it is less easy to be confused, but still possible. 2. I suggest modifying the instructions to show 4 (four) holes and advise the reader to remove the plugs on the two rear-most (on each side) holes. These are already the correct size for the bolts. Mate the two rear-most holes of the hitch with these holes and after affixing the hitch with two bolts using these holes, drill new holes on each frame rail for the other two (forward) attachment points. Continue the installation as shown in the video. I also suggest modifying the instruction document to reflect the information provided in the video - - it is correct. Thank you for a great product and for great service.

Installed to be able to use hitch mount bike rack. Works perfect. Was able to throw on a hitch ball and move an open car trailer. Installation on our 2010 Subaru Outback took someone with mechanical knowledge and tools.

Great product fit my 2013 Subaru Outback perfectly the instructions and video were helpful for the installation of the hitch and wiring harness. I suggest having someone help you for lifting into place. The hitch works perfect for towing my fishing boat and looks great on the Outback. The price is right also!

I just finished installing my new hitch on my 2011 outback. I am very happy with the results, the hitch fit like a glove and the hardware and instructions are great. I highly recommend watching the instructional
video, it is very helpful. Installation took me about an hour using basic tools. the hitch works very well with my bike rack.
Thanks again to e-trailer for providing a great product and excellent service at a fair price.

2012 SubaruOutback Wagon

I used this kit on a 2012 Subaru Outback wagon after i got the high price for add-on from the dealer. I viewed the website video, read the instructions and installed it, but in three hours, not 90 minutes. The things i liked were the quality of hardware, good instructions, and the web video. I really liked the bolt snaking tool. The only difference between the 2011 and 2012 is that the muffler is mounted differently, so i had to figure that out myself, but it was pretty easy. The wiring instructions were very good and lead me right to the factory connector. I like the hitch, the quality of the accessory hardware, the bag, and the US flag filler. The only thing i did not like was that the instructions for drilling / enlarging the hole to fish in the bolt seemed to be for smaller bolts than mine and took more time and effort. Again though, i saved $500.00 and this is an excellent kit

The installation videos provide an easy to follow step by step procedure. hitch fits and works great, thank you etrailer

The hitch arrived in two days two weeks ahead of car
Just had it installed on My subaru this morning and tried out my new bike rack
This is one sturdy solid hitch
Thanks for a quality product at a great price and excellent service
The web site was a cinch to navigate

Awesome product, we received our order quickly, and it was easy to install. Took me about 1.5 to 2 hours to install the hitch and trailer wiring. Hitch works awesome! Thanks for the great service and product.

Followed the installation instructions; took my time cutting the bolt "fishing" access holes to keep them as small as possible. Reused the plastic caps and RTV'd the holes to keep water and debris out. The hitch fits around the spare tire well like a glove. Excellent.

2011 SubaruOutback Wagon

Googled trailer hitch 2011 outback. Liked it, web site not working for placing the order so I called. They sent me a hitch that did not match the video I was looking at. After some confusion, I called and was told that I had ordered the wrong part, but the operator was the one who told me what part I needed. Service was bad from etrailer due to this, but they did give me the number to Curts and they were fantastic. Andy was helpful, we drilled a 1 1/8" hole instead of dilling holes by the existing hole and bending back. The dewalt holesaw was great - Lenox brand was not good. Etrailer was very quick on shipping - ordered Tuesday afternoon, got it Thursday, installed Friday. Installation took about 4 hours, but 2 hours of that was figuring that etrailer ordered the wrong hitch. Kinda glad they did, Curts is great!

  • Comparing Class III Receiver for 2012 Subaru Outback
Draw-Tite #75673 has 7 inch distance between the receiver hitch pin hole and the furthest rearward portion of the rear bumper when installed on a 2011 model Subaru Outback Wagon. Although the hitch will attach to the vehicle using existing holes in the frame, a 1-1/8 inch hole saw will be needed to drill an access hole in the frame member on both the driver and passenger side. This hole is necessary in order to feed installation hardware into the frame as shown in the install instructions...

All of the hitches we offer for the 2012 Subaru Outback Wagon will have the crosstube and hitch opening visible from the rear. I think the round tubes stand out less than the square ones so I would think the Curt part # 13390 would be the one you would like most.
