Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ford Flex - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2018 Ford Flex we're going to be installing Draw-Tite's class III 2-inch trailer hitch receiver. Part number 75679. And this is what our hitch is going to look like when it's installed. You are going to be able to see the cross tube, but it's going to be tucked back pretty well, so it won't be that visible. It is a Class III 2-inch by 2-inch receiver, so it's going to be great for all your towing needs. From trailers to bike racks to cargo carriers, it will handle it all. It uses a 5/8th-inch hitch pinning clip.

Now, one doesn't come included with the hitch, but you can pick one up here at etrailer.com using part number BC3.Additionally, the hole rearward of our hitch pin hole allows the use of a J-pin. A J-pin acts as an anti-rattle device. It features plate-style safety chain loops, and they have a very large opening, so they should accommodate just about every size and style of safety chain. It features a 400-pound tongue weight. That's the force going down on top of the receiver, and a 4000-pound gross towing capacity. That's how much it can pull behind it.

You can also use a weight distribution system with this hitch. However it does not increase either the tongue weight or the gross towing capacity. You do want to make sure you check your vehicle's owners manual to make sure you don't exceed their towing capacities. Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube, it measures about 14 inches. This is important when determining if you need to drop, rise, or raise shank on any of your accessories.

From the center of the hitch in hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it measures about 3 1/2 inches. This is important when determining if any of your folding accessories can be placed in the upright storage position without contacting the bumper. We'll begin our installation under the vehicle by putting a support strap underneath our exhaust. Next we'll remove our exhaust hanger brackets on each side. There's going to be two bolts that you're going to need to remove on each side with a 18 millimeter socket. Next, we'll release our rear exhaust hanger.

We're going to spray that with some silicone lubricant to make it easier to pop off. And you simply just want to pry that out of place. Now we're going to remove the exhaust hangers off of our muffler, so it'll just make it a little easier to get your hitch in place. So we're just going to spray those and then pull these off. We're going to do that on the other side as well. Now with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch into position. You want to get the driver's side over the exhaust first. Then your passenger's side. We'll now line it up with our existing weld nuts to the frame where we removed our hangers. Then you'll take your hanger, slide one of the bolts in your kit with the conical-tooth washer with the teeth facing the hanger, up through it, and we're going to thread that into our weld nut.Once you've got one bolt started through the hanger on each side, the hitch will hold itself into position making it easier to install the rest of your hardware. We can now tighten down our hardware using a 19 millimeter socket. We'll then torque our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions. Now we can reinstall our exhaust, lubricate the hangers. Just lift it into position. Line it up. And just slide it back on. We're going to repeat that for the remaining two hangers. We can now remove our strap. Then we're ready to hook up our trailer or favorite accessory and hit the road. And that completes our installation of Draw-Tite's Class III 2-inch trailer hitch receiver on our 2018 Ford Flex.

Got my trailer hitch delivered, pulled it out of the box. It was very easy to install, the wire harness was too install, no wire to cut and connect, just unplug and plug in the wire harness and screw in the ground zip. Would purchase from them again. Thanks again. 219948

Fit and finish was very impressive on our 2009 Flex SE. You hardly see the hitch hanging out under the bumper. The bolt holes on the muffler side are elongated to make installation easier which was nice, and the other side has a little give as well. Only thing that was difficult was the hardware was extremely tight and difficult to ratchet down in the frames weld nuts on the side opposite the muffler. I had to use a breaker bar to install them as they are so tight. Nothing was stripped or anything like that, its just the tolerance with the weld nuts and the included bolts is so tight that using a regular ratchet would have been very difficult. Make sure to torque them down too. I haven't used it for anything but a hitch bicycle rack yet, but plan on towing my fathers boat which weighs approximately 2700 lbs with the trailer. 15418

ordered this for my 2017 AWD Flex EcoBoost with dual exhaust, I went with the Drawtite brand due to having two other Drawtite hitches in the past... it shipped same day and arrived on time as indicated on my confirmation email. the packaging surprised me as it was in a “generic”/universal type box, which I would assume fits a multitude of different model hitches (most bigger than this one) it did have a thin plastic cover over the receiver area to protect the powder coat, despite it being lose in the box in was in good shape. I watched the video and figured that installing it myself shouldn’t be a problem... the installation took around a hour and went pretty much like the video, my 2017 has two exhaust hangers inboard of the rear lower control arms instead of one centered as in the video, but really not a big deal as far as the install. with all four exhaust hangers in place and the hitch torqued to spec l lowered the Flex down and noticed that the exhaust tips were no longer centered in the valance, upon inspection the issue was clear... a reinforcement bar on the hitch was coming in contact with the hanger on the passenger side and would need to be “clearanced” to allow the exhaust tips to be centered while the exhaust is in a “relaxed position. without any room to work on the hitch while it was installed I had to remove it and grind off the edge of the reinforcement bar to allow for proper fitment So after installing, uninstalling, grinding and reinstalling MY total install time was around 3 hours, inspite of the extra work the receiver fits closely to the valance and is not obtrusive. this hitch came in at about half the price as the factory one from my dealer and should be more than sufficient for my bike rack and 5x8 trailer 521545

Good product. Fits exactly as expected. Installation took about an hour as expected too. Only one issue which is why I gave it 4 stars. After it was installed, I tried to insert the pin and it wouldn't go through. After closer inspection, there was a metal burr restricting the pin from passing through, so I had to use a metal file to file down the burr to allow the pin to pass through properly. See attached photo. Other than that, no issues. Also, the instructional video was VERY helpful and made the installation quite easy to do. 295358

I have to say after reading some other reviews before I had received my trailer hitch. I felt I would either have an easy or difficult install. I had done the install by myself and it took less then an hour. Over all the products are great and it was a smart choice to buy from entrailer. 198906

Great looking and fairly easy to install. I would recommend having a second person to help lift and hold it in place. It is quite a chore doing it by yourself. I used a couple of jackstands to help support the weight of it while installing, but another's help would have been great. Sal at etrailer was most helpful in taking my order and answering all of my questions. When it was all done, I was happy with the way it looked. I don't think it hangs too low, especially since it was a fraction of the cost as an OEM one from Ford. 473978

Etrailer did a great job on delivery. Arrived within a couple days, ahead of schedule. Shape of the hitch for a Ford Flex is a bit complex. Never the less it fit very well within the space available. Only challenge was that the fourth bolt hole required some pressure to make it line up. A little surprising given they were slotted holes. But it might have been the car. I don't have a full history on the car. Overall, very pleased and would recommend it. 688363

Excellent hitch! Fairly easy installation. Required a little extra effort to get it to fit around the muffler on the drivers side, but grab a second (or third) set of hands, and it shouldn't be a big deal. 680707

I was checking on the internet to get a new trailer hitch for my 2014 Lincoln MKT. I got my part and it fits perfectly, I am way super satisfied and will definitely buy from etrailer again! The how-to videos are great. This made installation a little more comfortable. Especially when you do not perform this type of work every day. The parts were of high quality and are working as expected. Thank you 679993

I managed to install it myself, but having a second person would have made it a bit easier. It fit perfectly and it looks good on my black Flex. It's constructed from heavy materials and seems quite well built. It was well packaged and arrived quickly. I have used etrailer before and have always found the service top notch. 667885

After 3 1/2 hours we got the hitch and wiring on. First off, holes wouldn't line up because hitch was hitting spare tire well, so had to grind off corner of hitch to clear. Then slots were spaced too far apart (from one side of car to other) so we had to file 1/8 inch out of slots so that we could get screws to line up with holes in car. When it came time to install wiring kit after an hour or so I finally cut the single wire going to the right side and dropped the wire down from the top and then respliced the wire. I just couldn't pull the end of the wire with all the connectors on it up through the small access area. If you would install a small connector on the single wire so that you could disconnect the end of the "right" wires drop the end of the wire down and then reconnect the wires like I did it would save splicing the wire back together and making it much easier to install that "right" wire. 668466

by:
Lincoln

The hitch arrived right on time and in good condition. The upright on the passenger side is just a tad close to the spare tire wheel well and required a bit of "persuasion" so the drivers side bolts would align. Instead of the bolts supplied, it would be advantageous to bolts like Lincoln uses which help guide the bolt into the hole. Otherwise, I am quite happy with the hitch and can't wait to tow something. 666418

Wonderful product. Excellent customer service. From the product descriptions in the beginning, the installation instructions and the personalized follow up, working with etrailer.com is what you expect from a top-notch company. I will note, however, that the installation is not a one-man job. An extra set of hands would of come in helpful. I used a set of jack stands and my vehicle jack to improvise and to help lift the hitch into position until I could get a bolt to catch. After that it was all a breeze as the hitch utilized existing holes on the frame. No drilling! Even the wiring was made simple and fool proof. I would definitely use this company and product again. 662247

I got the hitch installed on my 2009 Ford flex, and one of the four bolt holes do not line up with my chassis. I tried every which way to get it to work. The driver side rear hole simply doesn’t lineup. Also, on the passenger side, the hitch rests up against the spare tire well so I can’t slide it over further. I had hoped to have it ready for vacation but that won’t be the case. 658610

Comments

When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

Apart from having the same exhaust hanger clearance issue on the passenger side as "Frank from PA" installation was a simple four bolt affair. I was able to lower the exhaust and relive the receiver for clearance without removing it. Total time for the receiver was about an hour with no lift (floor jacks and stands only). 652202

It took me about two hours to install the trailer hitch by my self. A second person is really needed. The only problem I had is you have to start the driver side first or the bolt holes don't line up. It's a really tight fit against the cargo compartment. Once you get it on it is a perfect Overall it I give it 5 stars. 640639

by:

The hitch itself is great. No problems at all installing it. 637694

- 75679
by:

The hitch bolts on the driver's side must be started first. This is due to the passenger side of the hitch fitting too snug against the spare tire well. Side to side movement is inhibited. 632037

by:
2011 Ford Flex

This hitch came in packaged very well. Looks are very good but install was supposed to be 40 mins approx. But that didn't happen. Dropped the exhaust like was supposed to the started with the hitch. 3 of the 4 new bolts went in flawless but the 4th wouldn't start no matter what pattern I tried. Kept wanting to crossthread like the hole pattern in the hitch was off. The 40 min install turned into 3 hours. Finally got the hitch on but basically had to impact 1 bolt in or take the hitch off. Kinda disappointed at this point. 613106

Comments

Any vehicle thats more than a few years old can have road grime or corrosion build up in the nuts welded up into the vehicle frame. Using a wire brush like whats found on a battery terminal cleaner and a spray lubricant do a decent job of cleaning those threads. If that wont work, youd need an M12x1.75 thread tap.

The product came in excellent condition despite the facts that the shipper nearly shredded the box. Good thing the bolts were In the hitch. I was impressed with how sturdy the hitch was, with a transmission jack and socket set it took about thirty minutes to install. 555603

So the box arrived a little beat up but no damage to the paint , Good thinking by putting the bolts inside the hitch for shipping . Installation went bad for me when 3- bolts came out hard and the fourth snapped off . That's life in the rust belt ( Mi. ) ! Had to grind the bolt flat - drill it out - tap it - to install new bolts ( 3 hr. ) . But after the bolt problem was solved the hitch fit my 2014 Ford Flex perfect ! Looking forward in hauling a trailer to pick up motorcycle projects and Pinball machines . 553478

So far, everything is good except for the packing. The piece was just put into a box with no padding around the sharp corners. As a result the hitch is scratched through to bare metal in several places where it poked through the carton. The pictures attached show the box with the top cut off of it, one of the holes in the carton and details of one of the scratched places. This is no big deal to me because the whole thing will get undercoated (mandatory here in the rust belt). Thanks 546178

I ordered the hitch on July 18th, and got on the 20th. I installed it this morning. Since I don't have a lift at my house and I was doing the job by myself, it took about two hours instead of the 30 minutes max that it would take if you had help and a lift. It's a very easy hitch to install, but since it's really heavy duty, it's heavy. My biggest problem was keeping one end up while I attached the other. I finally decided to use a small jack to hold one end up, and that worked fine. Even on the ground, if you have another person to help you, it should take less than an hour to complete the job. Kudos to etrailer for the install videos they post online. 544315

Never having installed a trailer hitch before I was a little intimidated with taking this project on. I enlisted the help of my son-in-law to help me with this project. The instructions that etrailer sent along with the hitch and wiring made this project a very simple and satisfying experience. Time to install both hitch and wiring took about 2 and 1/2 hours The quality of the hitch was superb and very sturdy pulling a box trailer behind my Lincoln MKT was almost like not having a trailer behind the car. Thank you etrailer for the ease of this project and I will definitely come back for my trailering needs! 496389

Curt hitch C13110 that you referenced is designed to fit the following models: 2009 - 2018 Ford Flex with Dual Exhaust 2010 - 2017 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost There are other hitch options available for your 2012 Flex without Ecoboost. I have included a link to them for you. The most popular option is Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75679. With it, less of the cross tube is visible when compared to the Curt hitch. If...

  • Why Would Trailer Hitch Install Hardware Seem Too Large to Fit Vehicle
  • The problem you are experiencing is pretty common for vehicles that have seen a couple winters. What happens is the weld nuts get a bit of corrosion in them and that prevents the bolts from being able to thread. This makes it seem like the nuts are too small. I checked your order notes and you're up north where the winters are pretty harsh too so that makes this even more likely. What you'll need to do it clean the weld nuts out so that you can thread the included bolts. I have included...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2017 Ford Flex
  • For your 2017 Ford Flex you can use Draw-Tite Class III trailer hitch # 75679. This hitch has a 2 inch receiver and is rated for 400 pounds tongue weight and 4,000 pounds gross trailer weight. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. If the...

  • Recommendation on a Hitch, Wiring Harness, Transmission and Oil Cooler for a 2011 Ford Flex
  • I have a hitch that will work on your 2011 Ford Flex with single exhaust. The Draw-Tite Max Frame Class III Hitch, # 75679, is a custom-fit trailer hitch that is designed for the 2011 Ford Flex. The hitch has a 400 lbs tongue weight capacity and a 4000 lbs gross trailer weight capacity. I recommend this hitch over the Curt hitch, # 13551, because the Draw-Tite hitch has an easier installation than the Curt hitch on the 2011 Ford Flex. The Draw-Tite hitch uses a no drill installation...

  • Recommendation for a Trailer Hitch that Will Fit a 2010 Ford Flex Equipped with Ecoboost Engine
  • We offer two hitches for the 2010 Ford Flex equipped with the Ecoboost engine. The Curt Class III receiver, part # C13110, and the Draw-Tite Class III, part # 75679. The only hitches available that use the cutout in the rear fascia are the factory installed ones. The Draw-Tite model would be partially visible under the rear bumper. These hitches are pretty easy for somebody with average mechanical ability and access to a torque wrench to install within 40 minutes to an hour. The...

I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2009 Ford Flex to Carry Scooter Carrier
  • The lift manufacturer is not giving you accurate information. Tongue weight figures are the same for if the setup is towing or carrying a hitch accessory. If anything you would want to be more cautious not exceeding that figure with a non-supported load like a carrier than with a trailer. For your 2009 Ford Flex you will need to install a Class III hitch to carry the carrier and the scooter. For that you would need our Draw Tite hitch part # 75679 which has a 400 lb tongue weight capacity.

  • 4-Pole Trailer Connector Mounting Options for 2009 Ford Flex
  • The Draw-Tite # 75679 would be great choice. For the trailer wiring harness, I'd recommend the # 118472 T-1 connector. I have two suggestions for how to attach the 4-pole connector to the vehicle. You'll need a long no-drill bracket, part # C57202, as well as the # 18144 mounting bracket. The 4-pole will push into the mounting bracket from behind. Your other option would be to use the same # 18136 bracket, along with the # 118137 bracket. You'd then use a # 30601 knockout adapter. • We offer replacement hardware kits for all hitches we sell. The item number for the hardware kit is # RHK. It has a 4,000 lb towing capacity which is the highest towing capacity option we have. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. The reason you only see single exhaust models in our pictures is just because we have not had one come it with dual exhaust to have the hitch installed. Once installed these two hitches will be fairly close to the rear of the vehicle; the hitch pin holes will be about 3-inches forward of the rear edge of the bumper cover. As most hitches go, this is a relatively large amount of clearance, meaning that a hitch cargo carrier will be fairly far from the two exhaust tips. • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2014 Ford Flex Towing a 3,200 Pound Camper Trailer
  • I suggest a weight distribution system that has sway control. To choose the correct system you'll need the tongue weight of your loaded and ready to tow trailer added to the amount of gear in the Ford Flex behind its rear axle. A trailer's tongue weight should fall within about 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. The best way to determine your trailer's tongue weight is to use a scale # 5780 Since your trailer is 3,200 pounds empty and it's presumable that you will be adding to...

  • What is Sway Control and Can it Be Used with 2011 Ford Flex
  • Trailer sway control is a type of device designed to either prevent or reduce trailer sway when on the highway. A very common style is the frictions way control like the # 83660 which attaches to the tow vehicle and the trailer and uses friction between the two when the trailer turns to try and reduce sway caused by high winds or passing semi trucks. This system has a tongue weight range of 200 to 600 lbs and features the only sway control on the market designed to fight sway before it starts. For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.

However, all of the Class III trailer hitches available for your vehicle are rated for a maximum of 4,000 pounds so you would be limited to 4,000 pounds.
